Question for Chris - Room Type Guarantee

Elite Room Type Guarantee
I've never been clear on what exactly sure on what this guarantee required of hotel.

From T&C:
Guaranteed Room Type: Priority for your requested type of room (subject to availability at participating locations).

All I've ever cared about was smoking/non-smoking part - but had a situation where I reserved a double room and when I check-in they gave me a king.
They were able to fix room, but made wonder what this guarantee really ment since I am going to another hotel that I know is booked solid.

If I book a room at a hotel and the rate is for a King room, but I put in my preferences that I want double/double, does the Hotel have to give me a double?

And are the preferences the one in my profile or the ones I indicate on the reservation?

This may not help totally but at RI and TPS that use RICHIE, if your rewards number is on the reservation your profile settings are automatically put on the reservation like non-smoking, king bed etc. So if your rewards profile says non-smoking and you book smoking both will show up on the hotel's arrival list.

So it can be confusing because your profile's settings trump anything else that goes on the reservation later. Ditto for bed-type. At RI and TPS that I know of.

rthib,

The Elite Room Type Guarantee means that if you book a reservation and request two double beds and a non smoking room (for example), you will be guaranteed to get it or the hotel will compensate you monetarily.

This guarantee only applies to the bed and smoking preference and can only be given if the reservation was booked prior to check in with your Elite Membership number attached. It is also important to note that if you do not receive the guaranteed benefit(s), it must be address with the hotel before check out. That way the hotel can either correct the problem, or provide the compensation.

That is correct, provided it is a full service property (i.e. Marriott Hotels and Resorts, Renaissance Hotels and Resorts). All of our select service hotels however, like the Residence Inn or Fairfield Inn are automatically booked into a specific room. So, if you book a queen bed at a Fairfield Inn, that is exactly what you will get at the hotel. The room guarantee would only apply to the smoking preference in this case.

The preferences on your profile are simply used as guidelines when making reservations. If you have noted that you prefer a king bed, yet you need two double beds for an upcoming family trip, it is simply a matter of making that know to the reservation agent. Whatever preference is actually on the reservation is what will be honored accordingly.
