Is it worth challenging for status if?
I have 20 nights to go before I'm platinum? I know for sure I will be staying at least for another 20 days at a Marriott, but not sure after that.

If that was the intent of your question, then I would say No since you already know that you will stay another 20 nights at a Marriott. I am not sure of the purpose of doing a challenge in your case. Perhaps others can chime in and give better reasoning in favor of doing the challenge.

Welcome
Welcome to FT and the Marriott Forum. I can only hope you learn as much as I have over the past 18 months! Just be careful, it is addicting!

Welcome fellow newbie. I assume since you're 20 days short of Platinum, then you are already a Gold Member. I had a friend go for a challenge just a couple of weeks ago. She was told that they do challenges only up to Gold. In order to get Platinum, you'll need to do the nights. Most of the airlines do the same. They typically only go to Mid-Tier Elite and never Top-Tier Elite.
It won't hurt to ask. Good Luck.

From a practical standpoint, in my experience there isn't really that much difference between Platinum and Gold insofar as amenities at your hotel are concerned (except maybe the welcome gift). See http://marriott.com/rewards/learn/memben.mi
This isn't like Starwood where the Gold and Platinum levels reflect significant real differences in what many of the properties give you.
