Both do a pretty decent job for SMS and calling (although Google Hangouts is more closely integrated with Gmail). They are also shifting GH to be more for enterprise/businesses (via Google Apps) so I don't know what's the future for GH.
My issue with GV/GH is that they both suffer SMS loss (SMS will go randomly missing esp with VZW iPhones) but I still use it as my primary mode of communication simply cause I've been using it for more almost a decade now.

Pep Wave Surf Soho is the router that I use when I am traveling. It is a little larger but it's 802.11AC, has a WAN port in case the hotel has a cable connection and a built in 4 port switch. The big thing is you can setup a profile on a port to enable QoS for your SIP phone. This will only help you on your local network but it gives your phone priority over other traffic.
