Yes. Just add one of your friends to the SPG reservation so they can checkin on their own.

It depends I think. Strictly speaking the actual rules of the SPG program are that in order to get credits and points the guest must both stay in the hotel and pay. Obviously if you are staying at the Marriott you are not staying at the *Wood. People do it and are successful but others report that they are declined. Of course if you are going to do something tat is technically dishonest it might be better not to advertise it on FT, where *Wood at least has active staff participating. Just saying.

Interesting question, and I don't think it's been asked or answered before, so there's probably no 'correct' answer as such.

As SPG and MR are still 2 separate programs, then IMHO SPG has no more business looking at the stays on your MR account than it would have if you had instead checked into, say, a Hilton or a Hyatt on the same night.

That said, to get you SPG credit, you will need to be physically present at check in, and pay for the room.

I would say with 100% certainty the answer is yes as long as OP personally checks in at both properties.

If the essence of the question is whether there is some kind of a cross-checking mechanism across SPG and MR for overlapping stays, I believe the answer is no - the "link" between the two is limited at this time to matching status and converting points to/from each other. As such, there is nothing preventing two concurrent nights across the two programs.

The remaining requirements, i.e. presenting one's self for check-in personally at some point, still apply for both rooms.

Agreed, seems incredibly unlikely that there is a check on this. In fact, I have stayed at Marriotts in multiple cities on the same day and received credit for both. I just don't think there is a check on this.

Please don't be so sensitive. I am certainly not judging you in any way. What you do is your business and certainly not mine and you don't have to justify it to me or anyone.

I was merely pointing out that " strictly speaking" it is possibly against the rules and highlighting that it "might" be wise, therefore, not to broadcast it. Whether you pay or not is irrelevant to the question, other than being a requirement for credit. If I pay for a room with SPG and don't stay in it then actually by the terms of "their " program I'm not entitled to a credit, for either the money spent or the stay credit. That has happened when I have paid for rooms on a prepaid basis and a flight cancellation has prevented me staying. Some people get credit, others don't. YMMV.

Although,if we are entirely honest, if you weren't concerned about whether it was legitimate I guess you wouldn't have asked so the outrage is a weeny bit disingenuous.
