Clarification RC points earning....

I stayed 2 nights at a property. At checkout on the lay day, I decided to extend by one more night and use points for that 3rd night. Does that mean i do not receive points for the first 2, paid nights? I don't care about elite credit as I assume the 3 nights count as one stay for those purposes.

No, you should definitely get the points for nights 1 & 2. And 3 nights credit as Marriott is night based, not stay based for elite counting purposes.

Marriott/Ritz does not go by stays. If you are a MR member you will get credit for 3 nights, two paid and one on points. If you change your membership to Ritz, you get four nights (for the two paid nights) and one night for the points night; a total of of five.

If you are going to stay at Ritz on a regular basis, you should change your status from MR to Ritz.

As for points, at Ritz you only get points for your room rate. If you want breakfast, etc.; choose a room rate that includes those (if offered)

MHO, Ritz gives better upgrades to their own then to MR members
