I got the e-mail this morning, but no details including whether there will be a gap between September 5 and when the new promotion begins

Just got the email posted in Loyalty Lobby a little while ago:

CHOOSE THE WAY YOU'LL EARN
Get ready, Duke787: On September 1, you can register for our next promotion and choose how you'll earn (up to 50,000 points!) Your bonus. Your choice.

Won't hold my breath after the terrible summer promo. Already have Platinum in the bag for next year (and with the 15 CC nights am already at Gold for 2018 too) so unless it's a strong offer I'll be looking more towards Hilton (if they continue 2x) and Hyatt (lots of conferences in Vegas coming up all at M Life hotels) for the rest of the year since I have a chance to retain Diamond with at least one of the two and the bonus at Hilton is substantially better.

I also wonder what "up to 50,000 points" mean....

The last few mega bonuses have been a joke, and I've not been targeted with any real advantageous offers for a very long time.

My guess: You can get that after 20 stays or 35-45 paid nights.

Bring back the certs! As MR claims that there are options, so please put the certs as an option!

I got the same email to. I'm wondering if it's going to match their summer promotion where you could get up to 10,000 bonus points starting with your second stay. The whole Marriott summer bonus thing was a little bit confusing because when it said that you got 2000 bonus points starting with your second stay I wasn't clear if that meant each time or starting with the second stay at self but it looks like it was for every stay after registering for the promotion following just one total stay.

My best bet is that the bonus has different levels - some get to earn the 50,000 (hence "up to 50,000"), while others will have to do with half of that, or less, as has been the case for me during the previous mega bonus offers.

Certs is also a good option for me.

Unfortunately a lot of folks keep complaining about not being able to use the certs so I hope they don't take that option away.

If they offer 1 cert after two stays vs 5k points after 2 stays or something, I would take the cert any day because it is a free night at a lot of hotels. Yes it won't be a beach resort, but I added a wiki to a thread on good uses here:

That is the start of registration but likely not the start of the actual promotion. I assume there will be some sort of gap. For example last year the promotion was:

Register by November 15, 2015
Stay at participating properties between September 15, 2015 and January 15, 2016

If they had the same schedule there would be only a 10 day gap, but it would be during some stays I already have lined up.
