I just got this offer today. I had 31 nights last year, but I don't know if I will be Gold or Silver this year as I haven't received the elite packet. I need some advice here. I'm UA Gold so the worst case is I will still be Marriott Gold (although I haven't linked my UA and Marriott accounts). Is it worth the 40K points to buy back Platinum?

Look at it this way:
Suppose you stay 30 1-night stays next year at $150 each.
- You will get 30 x 500 pts welcome gift (if that's what you select) = 15'000 pts
- You will get 25% extra bonus points (30 x 150 x 10 x 25%) = 11'250 pts
Total extra: 26'250 points for a cost of 40'000 points.
(More expensive stays, RI stays or other factors can change this ...)
Cheers,

And don't forget that Gold's are supposed to get upgrades just like Plats. And Gold's are supposed to get free breakfast and/or lounge access just like Plats.
So the difference between the two isn't very much.
Of course one more thing to add into your "points" calculation (and how many nights you will have this year) is that Marriott's elite soft landings. So if you aren't going to have enough nights this year, what about next year? If your a Plat this year, then Gold will be the worst you will be next. If you are Gold this year and don't make it for next, you could be dropped to Silver.
Of course most of us may not yet know what the year after next will hold.

But, on the flip side, if you expect to have a number of nights between 50 and 75, being Gold would result in rollover, whereas with Platinum, you would not have that.
So it all depends on what you expect your stay pattern to be

I have this formula to determine whether it's worth the buy back:
To buy Plat back I need 40k pts.
I value 10k = 100 USD, therefore 40k is like 400 USD to me.
If you can host 7 meetings for 400 USD or even 500 USD, then why not do that instead? If you run the meetings now, then your Plat will be reinstated until 2/2017. Plus 70 nights toward LT.
Did I miss anything?
