I'm so upset. I had a big fight with the people with whom I travel and I cancelled our (2) Category 8 rooms in Cancun. The packages expire in April 2015 but I've been assured I can stretch that out to another year after that.


I want to go somewhere that'll be fun but not too crazy as I'm a single woman of 70. I don't want to go to anyplace with a MCVI (vacation club) because I have access to those already by owning quite a few.

Someplace interesting but safe. Any ideas?

Asia, Japan or China are interesting and safe if you haven't been there

Check out Scrub Island. We haven't been there but looks awesome.

A lot of con artists in Asia, especially China and Vietnam; a bit in Thailand. I've never had any problems in Japan though. With the dollar so strong, I'd opt for Australia, New Zealand, Europe.

Can you provide more details? Otherwise you're going to get answers all over the place (including one country suggested in this thread that doesn't even have a Marriott LOL). Are you looking to relax on the beach? Tour museums? Go on wine & food tours? Hiking (I know a 75 year old who is an active hiker)? Do you want it to be within a certain number of hours flight from EWR? The answer to questions like those will allow FTers to make more precise suggestions.

Consider Ireland. You have the Shelbourne in Dublin. It's a level 8 property and is very well located for sightseeing.

Just south of Dublin is the level 7 property, Powerscourt. I stayed there in October and loved it.

If I could fly FC I would love to go to Sydney but I'm not up to go to multiple locations intra Australia
I would like to go someplace where English is spoken. I don't want to go anyplace with cobblestones like Amsterdam or Brussels since I found out last year I couldn't walk there. I have neuropathy in my feet. And the bus tour we took was exceptionally horrible.
I'd rather tour around on a Greyline type of thing versus driving but not like that stupid Windmill Tour.
I like temperate weather like Springtime in Paris which I loved when I was younger.
I like swimming pools and the beach but many of my timeshares are on the beach so I've got that covered..
I like museums and high tea. I think this makes me sound like such an old lady, ugh!

Again I live near EWR. If I can get somewhere on a first class flatbed seat that would make me happy-- like our Hawaiian trip in November to the Marriott Ko Olina.




I love London. I've been several times now. I can walk or take a tour bus or a cab. I like that very much

I would like to try Dublin if the streets are not cobblestone. I'm sure I could get a tour from the hotel.

One more data point: UA has a nonstop flight from Newark to Dublin.

DOH! I belong to too many hotel programs; I never bothered checking to see if there was a Kiwi (New Zealand) Marriott; I know that there are several very nice Marriotts in Sydney Australia.
My post was mainly in concern over a recommendation for China (I was just there and encountered con artists daily) and many countries in Asia.

It's a good thing I didn't also recommend Greece in my post.



To the OP: My daughter had a great time in Australia. She stayed at the Circular Quay Marriott which is cat 8. With the exchange rate, now is a good time to go there; it's currently around 1 AUD = 82 US cents. The exchange rate hasn't been that good since 2008.

It's a long trip and not nonstop, but I think Singapore would suit the OP. It's very safe and clean but interesting and English is spoken.

Australia is also a great choice. Do one week in Sydney and one in Melboune, plus think about adding on shorter stays elsewhere if you have the time.

In Japan, there's a lot of English spoken in Tokyo and Kyoto, less elsewhere in the country IME.

All good Asian recommendations. I've never had any issues in Japan or Korea; haven't been to Singapore but haven't heard of any con artist problems there.

A lot of good European choices, but many involve cobblestones.

You can take UA EWR to DEL. nonstop. Spend time in Delhi, go see the Taj Mahal in Agra. Very hot in summer. Nov to Jan is best.

Personally I would recommend Dublin and London, just did that trip myself and it was amazing. Im trying really hard to think what kind of streets Dublin had (since you said no cobblestone), but I really cant remember (I wasnt spending a lot of time looking at my feet!).

Question, since Ive never had one of these packages, do you need to stay by the expiration date, or just book? If you have to stay by it and cant get it extended, that cuts out a lot of places due to weather imo. Dublin would be quite cold.

Sydney is good for a full week at an easy pace. Safe and wonderful folks. And of course you can feel free to visit us here in Williamsburg, but bring a car, and you sure won't find a CAT 8
