Annual fee due, pay then cancel?

So I am looking to pay for the annual fee on my and my husband's Marriott then cancel both cards and look to apply again next year.

Is the hotel gift certificate good for one year or 6 mos like the bonus sign up ( which by the way we couldn't use)

Six months, same as the one you get after being accepted.

Actually, the annual certificate is a category 1-5.

You almost certainly won't get the sign-on bonus again - so you are cancelling just to avoid the fee? Plus you will get a Cat 1-4 cert which are almost unusable now.

I have had Marriott card before and was able to get the 50k a second time, husband had it first time. We just weren't vacationing at the time that he got the bonus hotel night.
Looking to see if it is worth paying the $95 for a hotel night after renewal but not really wanting to hang on to card afterwards.
We are planning on paying the annual fee then canceling ( most likely will cancel with a reconsideration call once we apply for another Chase card ), presently I have 5 and husband has 3.
