Trust me, stay at a Hilton. I am a Platinum MR member and it really doesn't do anything beyond "club access". I've only ONCE been upgraded to suite and that was only after I went back to the front desk and spoke to the manager.

Marriott does not comp, but they may offer you a challenge stay. In 2000, I had to stay 14 nights in 60 days to get comped to Platinum. It wasn't difficult to do.
If you would be able to maintain platinum with a lot of stays you should position your request by saying exactly that, and that you would be willing to do so many stays in a period. Obviously make sure you can live up to the commitment.
Also, uf there is a particular property you plan to stay at a great deal then you might do well to contact the general manager of the property and explain to them that they should put there two cents in with the marriott service center.

the reluctance to comp is pretty laughable given the non-differentiation of the platinum program, and overall lameness in comparison to other top level hotel programs.
it's as if marriott thinks they're protecting highly sought after benefits.
are they ever going wake up and smell the coffee?

While I don't think the coffee is any better at Westins, but you will definitely upgraded to a suite more often at Starwood. I have been Platinum at Marriott for several years and have been only been upgraded to a suite once (although did get suites several times at one hotel; but they were all given by front desk assistant at that hotel that i "dated" for the few weeks i was there). I woke up at the middle of this year and saw the light at Starwood who comped me platinum and I have received suites on 70% of my Starwood stays since then.

Not a problem, guys. Head on over to the *wood and Hilton properties -- more upgrades at Marriott properties for the rest of us.

It looks like Marriott is not the property to be dedicated to...I like some of their hotels; however, I am not prepared to ride in the back until I reach qualifying nites...thanks for all suggestions...

I have a HH Diamond (not earned but comped based on 25 nights in 1 month)....new project demaned stay at Marriott.
So I called customer service - told them about my HH status & new offer AA upgrading to Silver - told her I'd really like an upgarde as I would be staying in Marriott for over 4 months starting soon. She spoke to her supervisor asked me to enrol in the gold or platinum challenge - 12/18 nights in 3 months. I told her I'll take the platinum challenge - she asked me to fax my current HH statement.
After 2-3 days I called again & she said I can only enrol in gold challenge - so after "disussing" for 15 minutes I asked for her supervisor. Se was quite nice & enrolled me in the platinum challenge (18 nights in 3 months at any Marriott - I am at the Residence Inn) & also comped me to Gold right away - so there goes!!

Checked in under my status this Monday - I get Gold benefits & hopefully will have Platinum by Thanksgiving.
