AARP rates?

While surfing Expedia, I found some irresistible AARP rates. But what exactly is the AARP rate? Does one have to be member of the AAA in order to get them? Is it possible to become member even if one does not live in the US? Or is this rate also available to those who are member in European Automobile Associations which cooperate with AAA?

Theoretically, you need to be a member of AARP, which used to be an abbreviation for American Association of Retired Persons (now it's just four letters!). You have to be 50 or older to join. Membership costs something like $15/year. I doubt that many hotels would ask to see your membership card, although they might if you don't look at least 50.

The AARP card also gives you a 20% discount on all meals (except liquor and room service) at Marriott and Renaissance Hotels & Resorts in the U.S. , even if you aren't a guest.

I just checked the AARP website (www.aarp.org) and they accept memberships from those outside the US at $28 a year. Look at the join/renew link near the top of their website.
I save at least that much just on the 20% discount on meals on a week stay at a Marriott resort. The room rates are also frequently quite good.

That's amazing information! Is it documented anywhere? I would hate to have an argument at a hotel restaurant about getting this discount.

AARP sent me a temporary card. I use it all the time for the discount, and I am no where near 50....
