Why RI only 5 points per $?
Dude, what gives..? Why does MR only offer 5 points per dollar for Residence Inn? Last time I checked the Fairfield Inns were the budget/low-cost hotels. Why not penalize them? I'm paying more per night at the Residence Inn than Courtyard and Marriott! Oh well....

For the longest time until 1999 I think, you didn't get anything for the RI, no stay credit, no points, notta... i'm happy with this.. actually I think b/c it is a long stay hotel.. many people stay real long times.. six months at a time or more.. that they would rack up too many points.

I have been wondering this too. We should let Marriott know that RI should be 10 points per $1. Hilton has no distinction between chains.
Also, has anyone ever asked why the RI do not have bacon in the morning? Have been told this is a Marriott policy.

I have started to shift my business to other hotels, typically Hiltons to get the full 10 points per dollar.

Just to nitpick, Hilton's FF double dip is 100 miles at Hampton Inns vs. 500 miles at their other properties.

1) It's really more an ownership issue, Marriott purchased the Residence Inn brand back in the 80's...so management/franchise contracts were written much differently than Marriott would have like.......(owners/francheisee's were concerned about cost/benefit of the points...their feeling was that extended stay guest do not book based upon points)...many issues with this one but they finally settled on 5pts per room rate $
2) Marriott can only set the Min standards (not the max). The Min is at least 3 times a week a meat must be included

If I recall correctly, TP Suites give you 10 pts per dollar but you do not receive the Elite bonus

marriott either manages properties or has franchises but owns few hotels with its name. getting each brand to go along with a program is a lot of work. the ri is a long term stay kind of place. the cost for the points and the service at the hotel combined with the rate governs the points.
i have found an ri next to a courtyard is $10/nite more and i get breakfast and snacks for dinner for free at the ri. on top of that, they will go get my groceries and provide a kitchen, fridge, etc.
if you want the 10 pts/$, stay at a full service hotel.
