Room Upgrade Bingo
I'm new to this...
I'm MR Platinum -- but most of my stays are at Courtyards or Residence Inns. However I have a trip coming up that puts me in a Renaissance.
What are my chances for a room upgrade? Is there any way to improve the odds? Is there any way to gain insight into the specific odds for a particular location or set of nights? (Sort of like using ITN to pick better flights for 1st class upgrade chances...)

What Renaissance are you staying at?
It varies by hotel

Are there any general tips for improving the odds of a room upgrade?

Sorry i didn't post a response -- I have never stayed there. Used to stay at the Marriott Inner Harbor at least once a year, but the convention I attend moved to DC
To have a better chance of upgrading, make sure that your reservation includes the fact that you are now a Platinum.
And if never hurts to ask at check in "did I get the upgrade"? The check in clerks seem to have a lot more leeway than CSRs at the airport.

In my experience, Marriott will only upgrade to a conceirge floor room, not a suite. The only difference I've noticed between a std room and conceirge floor room with Renaissance is larger bottles of shampoo and some Q-tips, sometimes a robe. Good luck though!

A couple of Labor Days ago, my partner and I were upgraded to a magnificent suite at the Mayflower in Washington DC (Renaissance). Very grand right down to the fireplace. What made it even nicer was that we were celebrating our 1 year anniversary and returning to the same get-together where we had met the previous year in Cleveland. I was Platinum but had never stayed at the Mayflower before and we were taking advantage of a very good weekend rate. We threw ourselves an anniversary party and invited the whole conference. Oh the liquor bill!
