Expedia vs Marriott web site

Will I get the same stay credit if I book a Marriott stay through Expedia or the Marriott web site? Will the Double Points special still apply if I pay Expedia with Visa?

I just got a reply to the above question from Marriott, so I thought I'd stick it in here for archival purposes!

Here's the quote:

When booking through a online travel agency, it disqualifies you from earning points.

In order to receive credit for your stay at all, you would have to pay through Marriott.

This statement is entirely inaccurate. If you book your room at a rate that is otherwise eligible for points, you will get points. If you book through Priceline, HRN or some other wholesaler of rooms (which may under some circumstances include unpublished rates purchased through Travelocity, Expedia, etc.) you will not get points.

I think the key phrase is in the second line of their response - "pay through Marriott". Perhaps if the payment is not made directly to Marriott stay credit is not earned?

My experience is that, despite their statement, merely booking through an online travel agency doesn't disqualify.

In any event, it looks like Expedia's special rate won't earn me any points.

I have ALWAYS experienced a great deal of pain getting points to post to hotel programs when booking through Expedia or Travelocity. The only good news: eventually I've gotten the points - after writing letters, faxing receipts, making phone calls, etc. For long stays, I will usually go through the pain. For short stays, I won't.

I don't use Expedia or Travelocity anymore unless the rate really is a LOT better than any other source which, to Expedia's/Travelocity's credit, it sometimes is.

I've booked Marriott and HHonors stays through Orbitz, and the points have posted with no problems.
