Marriott guest cheques?

In terms of earning points and stay credit, are these things the same as cash?

I believe they do. I'm not familiar with 'guest cheques' directly, but if they are gift certs bought from their site or from some place like gift certs.com they are indeed the same as cash and you should earn points for their use.

Absolutely the same as cash. I've used them many, many times. In fact I used $6000.00 worth during a 45 day stay at the Maui Marriott. Got all the points!

The only bonus you won't see is the double points if you pay with a Visa. You would get the double nights credit toward Elite if you paid a small balance on your Visa. Consider that.

Have fun, save $

Is there a way of getting these certificates at a discount? I know MilePoint allows you to use miles (10% of total) to purchase them. Is there other way?

For those interested in saving 10% on Marriott gift checks....

Use 1-800-GiftCertificate

enter the service code ET9211T

(Entertainment Publications discount).

This offer expires 12/31/01.

Of course, the new Marrott card announced in the discussion yesterday will also give you a 10% discount.

Happy lodging!!

As far as I know everyone here is correct about getting points when using a gift cert.

However, after my Nov. 3rd stay at Courtyard my points posted at 390. I paid an $89 room rate and used a $50 gift cert. Put the balance of $39 on my Marriott Visa. I have faxed MR CS about it and not heard a word. A small aggravation!

Then I looked today and it is posted as 500 points earned. So they just reversed it. A bigger aggravation! Come on Marriott, this is wasting my time.

11/3/01 11/4/01 CY SAN DIEGO DOWNTOWN TOTAL: 1,390
BASE EARNINGS 500
DOUBLE POINTS BONUS 890

here's why I ask:
I'm looking for a replacement VISA rewards card. I was looking at this umbrella bank visa, http://www.umbrellabank.com/credit_c...laair_card.asp
which has rewards at the 5, 10, and 15 K point levels as well as the standard 18K and 25K any airline rewards.
5K points can be redeemed for a $100 point marriot gift cheque. If this can then be used to accrue additional rewards at marriot, it seems like a good card to me.
thoughts?
any better ideas?
i'm open....

Yesterday I checked out of the Seattle Renaissance and used a gift cheque for part of my bill. They deducted the amount from my folio and took away the corresponding points. This is the second time this has happened to me at this hotel. Thinking about this, it makes absolutely no sense. If I had gone down and said I wanted to apply a $50 bill to my account, would they have deducted those points? Anyway watch out for this practice.

(Well, that's gift certificate or guest cheque, whatever!)

TravelWeary, I called MR CS today. They rectified the problem I posted above in just a few minutes. I shouldn't have wasted my time faxing and emailing. I think a call is in order on your part. Good luck!
