** On or before May 30th, 2018** - ALL Chase Marriott cardholders that held the card as of March 15th, 2018, will receive:
  • 1 Night Stay Certificate for a Category 1-5 Marriott Hotel
  • 15 Night Stay Credit towards elite status

** CHASE HAS CLOSED ACCOUNTS AS OF MARCH 15, 2018 **

By now you should have been notified that your Marriott Rewards® Visa® Credit Card will be closing on March 15, 2018. Here's what you need to know:

• CONTINUE EARNING.
You will still be able to continue to use your Marriott Rewards Visa Credit Card and earn points on eligible purchases through March 14, 2018. After that date, you will no longer be able to make purchases or earn points on your Marriott Rewards Visa Credit Card.

• USE YOUR POINTS.
This does not impact your Marriott Rewards account. You will still be able to access and use any points and benefits that you have earned.

If you have paid an annual fee for your card any time between April 2017 and December 2017, Chase Canada has said that they will give you a prorated rebate of the fee back as a statement credit on your account.

If, however, your annual renewal fee is due between January 2018 and March 2018, you will NOT have to pay it. You may continue to use your card until March 15, 2018

As a cardholder, you will still receive your 15 Elite Night Credits and Free Night Certificate, regardless of your anniversary date. They will be deposited into your Marriott Rewards account after March 14, 2018.

Existing Chase Marriott Visa cardholders will be given a special signup to the Amex SPG CC for 25,000 welcome points and $120/yr annual fee.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Information below is left here for reference only, so that others who applied before the deadline can refer to the info.

If you find a working application link buried in this thread and apply through it don't be surprised if you do not get the advertised welcome bonuses.

Tips:
  • Go to marriott.com and apply for a Marriott Rewards account first, and have the member/account number ready during application. If you did NOT do this then Chase will create an account for you - look for the numbers on the lower left of your new Visa card, it may be displayed there.
  • Spend at least $1 on your new card by the 9th of the month, so that the txn posts by the 11th onto your online account at Chase (https://online.chasecanada.ca).
  • Seemingly, all Canadian Chase Marriott Visa accounts cycle on the 11th of the month. Points are posted by Chase to Marriott.com and the 50K points will appear by the 18th or 19th of the month.
  • You will see the points posted on page 3 of your paper statement when it arrives in the postal mail. Chase does not provide Canadians with an online PDF statement, only transactions. If by the 19th you don't see points posted, double-check the Marriott Rewards number on your paper statement to ensure it matches your true account number, in case Chase messed up and created a new MR account on your behalf.
  • When setting up payment for the card at online banking, look for "MARRIOTT VISA" as the card name.
  • If using this card outside of Canada, ensure you prime the PIN onto the card at a CHIP/PIN terminal while IN Canada, before you leave for your trip. You cannot prime the card while in Europe (for eg.)
  • YMMV, but if you decide to cancel this card, it is advisable to do it WELL before the anniversary date, as Chase may not pro-rate a refund.
  • If you plan to use this card outside of Canada (no FX fees), you should call Chase to let them know, so your card won't get locked. I've never called when using it on extended travel in the US, but for sure I would call and let them know if I was going to use it elsewhere (Europe, Asia, Antarctica).
  • If you log out of MARRIOTT.COM and notice an 80,000 point offer, it is a USA-only offer.
  • You can find List of Marriott Hotels and their Categories via below searches

  • 2017 Marriott Rewards Category/Tier Update: On March 7, 2017, 23% of our hotels and resorts will change category.

alc, my experience:
Signed up for 50K, 1-nite Cat 4, $0 FYF in Aug 2012.
Cancelled Aug 2013.

Signed up again in Sep 2014. Got the same promo offerings: 50K, 1-nite Cat 4, $0 FYF.

Has anybody signed up for the US card in addition to the Canadian card? Can they both be linked to the same MR #?
Thanks for sharing your info. I haven't received a 50K promo email from Chase since the 'public' offer became available, and wondering if it's a coincidence.

As for the US and CAN cards, I haven't done it, but I know of others who have signed up for BOTH, and have them linked to the same Marriott Rewards #.

I created a Wiki at the top, using JJonahJ's excellent summary (credit was given)

I'm gonna apply one in 2015, since I have no immediate use for 50K points

Jerry, that is fwacken AWESOME! Thanks for taking the time to create it. I kept seeing the same things asked, over and over again, so in a fit of raging responsibilities, I cranked out that post.

Something you might want to add if you have the energy, is a link to the list of Marriott hotels and their Cat levels...saw that somewhere once before, I think crimsona posted it.

Also, that if you plan to use this card outside of Canada (no FX fees), you should call Chase to let them know, so your card won't get locked. We haven't done this, but I have read that others have done it successfully. Maybe someone else can chime in with some recent datapoints, and if so, it's wiki-worthy.

More wiki material: if you decide to cancel this card, do it WELL before the anniversary date, as Chase will NOT pro-rate a refund.

Chase does name checks, but Marriott allows free spousal point transfers anyways. You're better off with 2 accounts do double up on promos as needed

That is not my experience. I cancelled this card twice (spouse and myself). Both times several weeks after the AF was posts and both times Chase credited back the fee in full.

Thanks for the additional data point, Youponder. I edited the wiki accordingly. Until we get more feedback on annual fee refunds when the card is cancelled AFTER the anniversary date, we shall consider that YMMV.

Fair enough, but after following the Chase Marriott Visa threads here and at the RFD-kiddieland for the past 2 years, in my recollection there have been many more people complaining of NOT getting a pro-rated refund, than the other way around. In fact, I don't even recall reading anyone else, before Youponder's post, saying they were successful to cancel with a grace period. But, for a while we also thought it was next to impossible to churn this card, yet it's being reported with more regularity now, that it CAN be done, so perhaps they've also relaxed the cancellation policies. Myself, I'll be cancelling BEFORE my renewal date.

I've used this card in Asia, Europe, Australia and SA on probably 2 dozen trips over the last 2 yrs. I've never called, and it's never been denied.

That's cuz of the rabbit's foot and luck charms bracelets that you wear, mg!

Again, just going by what I've read from other people's experiences...I'd rather be proactive and CALL, than to be stuck overseas with an unusable/locked card.

There's also a thread at RFD that explains why you should use the Chase cards at a real brick and mortar store (an actual PIN/CHIP reader) to ensure the PIN is primed properly onto the card, before you use it for the first time outside of Canada. Else, you could end up with declined first usage in Europe where requiring a PIN is a MUST, and signing a slip is not accepted. Some people used their cards for the first time with an online payment, not realizing this didn't activate the PIN on the card when they tried to use it in Europe. Just sayin' !

Anyone tried using this card with PayPal for making online purchases in non-Canadian funds, to avoid the FX fees? If you don't set up your card properly at PayPal, you'll end up using PayPal's default payment option, which is to allow PayPal to charge its own currency conversion, and then bill your card, thereby subjecting you to an exchange fee similar to the FX fees. I forget the steps now, but I have it noted in one of my files.

Does anyone know how picky is on your credit score for new applicants. My EQ score is currently 671 due to high util (48% on credit cards, 28% on charge cards), but I pay in full every month. 2 inquiries in the last year.

Also curious as to whether my Marriott rewards account will support 2 cards. Just got the USD Chase Marriott card with the 70k signup bonus. Wondering if the Canadian bonus will post since I don't have any other Canadian Marriott cards...
