Reservation deposit

I consider myself an experienced frequent flyer, but I'm a total newbie when it comes to hotels and frequent guest programs (I usually scope out hostels, YMCA's and the like), so here goes: I'm planning to stay at a Residence Inn and found a great "Come Out and Play" rate on their website. One of the rate rules says: "Cancellation Policy: 1 NTS RM & TX CXL PENALTY-AS FIRST NIGHT PAYMENT." I suppose this is fairly obvious, but I just want to make sure: does this mean I'll be charged a 1-night deposit when I reserve? or when? or what exactly?

I don't believe this is a deposit. It means you will be charged for 1 night if you do not show and fail to cancel your reservation before the indicated cancellation time. The cancellation time is typically day of arrival at 6 PM (hotel time), but may differ. Some hotels are 4 PM day of arrival, others 1 day prior to arrival, or perhaps several days before for resorts and other upscale properties. Priceline and other advance purchase rates are usually non-refundable so regardless of when you cancel you are out the money. The reservation confirmation you receive should indicate what the cancellation time is.
