Should I redeem my points

I haven't been doing much traveling over the last couple of years. I have 155K Marriott
points which I was thinking of cashing in for a Choice package, using the ticket to go to
Australia. For 200K I would get TWO free tickets and an extra 2 nights. But I figure
it would take 12-15 stays to get the extra
45K.

My question is, has there been any rumors about Marriott changing the program for 2001,
raising the required points for this award?
Or should I take the points and run off to Oz? I figure I could do no more than 3 or
4 Marriott stays in the next 4 months. I'd like to go to Oz in late April/early May
after "The Wet". Thanks.

Well, the Award office told me last year, that the 200,000 mile award would NOT be changed. But it was by removing the 8 day FREE Full size Hertz car!

Have been sorry, that I didn't request the award and then think of a place to use it. Nowyour question makes me think I should do it this year, if there is any chance Marriott will weaken it further.

Yes, that "Hertz discount" they give isn't much - I get them in the mail all the time.
My corporate discount beats that by a mile.

I'm thinking of cashing it in. I'll get the
60K miles into my UA account (I think that's how they handle united awards) and I'm sure
I'll find a place to use the hotel (Cairns or Surfer's Paradise).

A bird in the hand...

I stayed at the Surfer's Paradise Marriott on the award. They gave me a Suite, but the air filters for the air conditioning must have been blocked with dirt. I got a heavy dose of someone's smoke from other rooms and the only time I have had breathing problems. The engineer corrected it the next day, but I was ready to go on. Great view from the HIGH rise. Looks more like Hong kong. Believe it was Asian money that built most of those towers. A big change from 1980, when there were only 1 story motels hidden in the bushes.

I guess now is as good a time as any to plan for next year. As I said in another forum,
I wish I planned my trip better this year,
so I could have been at the MCG yesterday
to watch the Essendon Bombers win the Grand
Final, instead of sitting in my den until
3AM this morning, adorned in my Bombers cap, T-shirt and scarf!

Other than the breathing problems from the room (though that's good!) how was the resort and the general area? I've been to
Queensland a couple of times (Port Douglas and Fraser Island), and was considering
S.P. or the Courtyard resort in Cairns.

Any recommendations?
