As a point of interest, I learned this week that I can switch from points to miles and back again at will by calling Marriott Rewards.

So, if I am staying for a night at "cheaper" property, I can opt for 500 miles by calling Marriott Rewards in advance. If I find myself staying 3 or 4 nights, I can switch back to points. Either stay counts for Marquis status.

The caveat is that I must call ahead. Hyatt allows one to choose at check-in. This is not the case with Marriott, but close.

Thanks for the tip John Gill but how is this
option different from the Marriott Miles program? I'm a little confused.

Marriott Miles gives you 500 points per stay,
or more (Unfamiliar with this program because I prefer the Rewards.)

Normally I will just take the points, build
them up in my Marriott Rewards account and
book a room for free at the most expensive
hotel (I did that in San Diego for the suites hotel, and it was nice to get a 365 dollar room for FREE!)

Register (anyway - if you are going to use it or not) ALSO for Marriott miles (and rewards).

Then, whatevever the length (and $ spent) of your stay you decide (you can still change your decision at check-out-time) if you prefer miles or points for that specific stay.

Rewards and Miles are "joint"-accounts (so the number of nights of both programs are counted together for future or renewing status with Marriott).

Miles: you get 500 Miles (into your preferred airline-program + after every 5th "miles"-stay/12-months with Marriott a bonus of 2'500 miles which brings the mileage per stay to 1'000). And Marriotts "pays" miles (and bonus-miles) for ANY discounted rate too!

For short-stays (and low $-bills) I choose miles - for longer stays rewards.
