Current value of MR Points
Was looking for some info as to what people would value MR points at right now. Have a stay I need to charge a friend for but not sure how to figure out what a fair value would be...
The total is 41,000 points.

1) Selling award stays violates MR terms and conditions
2) A real friend gifts award stays to friends if needed

If you knew the other part of the story you might change your tone. I was in the room, we were splitting the stay. I'm sorry if I don't give things away for free, maybe all the people who don't pay for their business travel can do that but I don't.

Violating the rules
Didn't realized I asked for your opinion on how I use my points.

You are charging a friend to stay in a room, with you, that you got for free?
If a friend invited me to stay in a room they redeemed with points, I'd probably take them out to a nice dinner, unprompted, but if they asked for cash- we probalby wouldn't travel together any longer.

Mods why don't you close this thread as it apparently doesn't meet VickiSoCal's moral standards, and I'm sick of hearing her talk. I'll take my question elsewhere.

If you didnt' want opinions you shouldn't have posted.
Can you not calculate best avaiable rate divided by two? Or by the number of people in the room if it was greater than 2?

To answer your question in terms of "value" I would look at the rate the room was otherwise available for and divide in half. That's what the miles were worth on that night.
As to the moral issue everybody does stuff differently so I am not judging you. For ME if I give points/miles to a friend it's without strings. If they buy me a nice dinner, or something, that's great but for me life is too short to worry about every penny like that. Plus, it's something nice I can do for my friend. Maybe they will repay one day and maybe they won't. In fact, I have given Marriott points and airline miles to friends many times. By the way, I pay for all my own travel myself not some corporate conglomerate. Again, that's ME and not judging you for how you operate. I should also add if I was going to have a friend give me money, which I would not do, I would make sure they knew of this before all the plans were made. I would not want to surprise them with it after the fact. Feels a bit tacky to ask for money but especially to surprise them after the fact. Good luck to you.

Ignore the other people. Just like someone said life is too short to worry about every penny... life is too short for you to either care what these people are saying about this or for them to care how you use your points. They are your points, so it is your right to use them as you wish (subject to complying with the terms of the MR Program).

I've stayed in a few "free" rooms before and I ALWAYS treat to a nice dinner or something.
When I'm buying the "free" room, I expect nothing in return.

I would say charge at about .005 per point.
I would charge .0025 per point if I was splitting.
Thats me anyway.
Also I agree with the original poster. I live in hotels on my own dime, so when I book a room and pay I figure the points I will get into the cost. Therefore I look at 40000 MR pts as 5 nights I don't have to pay out of pocket, and the cheapest hotel I can usually find is maybe $50/night.
Same goes for if I book a room with a friend and I will be receiving points I deduct it off there half so it is a 2 way street.

If you want to charge him for it, I'd say take the value of the room at the best rate available and he owes you half but that would have to be agreed upon before the stay.
If it were me and it wasn't a good friend, I might ask them to do the same. If it were a close friend or family, I'd call it an act of love.

I'm not at an age/position in life where I am willing to share a hotel room with a person who is not a close family member or friend. Maybe there's the difference.
Mind you, there was a time....
