Marriott Booking Engine - Quirk?

I was on the Marriott site today looking at making a reservation for Sydney, Australia for the first part of August and ran into something that I'm hoping someone can explain for me. Here's the scenario:

I went to book Marriott Harbour for the dates of 8/6 - 8/16. Rate comes up as 181 AUD but there is a notation that the rate changes on 8/9 to 259 AUD. When I go to price it out it gives me the breakdown of 8/6 - 8/9 as 181AUD and 8/9-8/16 as 259AUD for a total of 2356AUD. No problem, I understand that rates change. Just out of curiosity, thinking that maybe there were some days where the $181 rate wasn't available, I tried breaking up the dates into smaller segments. This is where I'm a little confused. When I break the entire stay into 3 reservations, this is what shows up:

8/06 - 8/09 181AUD/night
8/09 - 8/13 181AUD/night
8/13 - 8/16 181AUD/night

Grand total: 1810AUD

Summary: Booking the entire stay at once: $2356. Booking 3 separate smaller stays: $1810. Savings by booking 3 consecutive stays: $546 (to me a significant amount).

Is there some reason why Marriott wants to charge me more for booking one stay for the 8/6 - 8/16 time frame versus booking three consecutive stays for the same time frame? I don't mind booking three stays if that's what it will take to save me over $500. I would think from a resrvation standpoint on the Marriott side it would be easier/cheaper to deal with one reservation rather than three. Has someone had this happen to them before? Just curious....

Book the three stays. Ask for them to be combined at the front desk during check in. I do this all the time. This issue has been discussed many times on this forum.
