It seems like they have cracked down. I'm heading over in a weeks time and yhe Uber app wont connect to pick ups at SCL but it seems fine within the city.

That's disappointing - when government policies force tourists into danger of scams though backwards support of taxi drivers that are often too eager to take advantage of tourists and those who aren't majorly proficient in the local language, it makes it much less appealing to go to said destination and support their local economy.

I don't see any indication that the room rate is inclusive of VAT via the Marriott app. I'm assuming you paid the cash rate. Were you charged in CLP or the USD rate that's shown by default in the app?

Hotels within SCL are charged in USD. There is no VAT for foreingers for stays up to 59-days. If you request to pay in CLP, the 19% VAT will be added to the rate for a stay of any length.

Thanks, James, I learned something new today.

So if I head to other Chilean cities, then I can avoid VAT and pay in CLP?

If the W Santiago is showing $283 in total via the Marriott app, then that's what I'll pay?

For point of clarity, you need to pay in foreign currency (i.e., your USA credit card) AND produce your PDI immigration slip and passport for the VAT waiver.

To clarify, yes, you will pay the exact USD amount shown by Marriott - there is no exchange rate nonsense like some other Latin American countries.

If the Marriott rate is shown in USD and you have the appropriate documents as clarified by Eastbay1K you will be charged "that" rate in USD. It is exempt from taxation.

If the Marriott rate is shown in CLP, it is subject to the 19% VAT and applies to everyone. The Sheraton rates in Valparaiso are in CLP.

Rates in CLP: Taxes & Fees are not incuded.

Final Price with VAT added

If you have "Include Taxes & Fees" active, the rate shown will include the VAT.

Thank you!

I do have it checked because I want to know the total price. It's very interesting to know that I can avoid VAT in Santiago and I'll have to pay VAT elsewhere!

A foreign tourist paying with a foreign credit card at the Sheraton Via will not pay VAT. I have only been to Chile maybe 40 to 50 times, so I probably don't know much, but the only time I've paid VAT, no matter what currency the bill is based upon, was at some small cash or bank transfer only cabaa places in Cochiguaz.

But again, given my limited experiences, use my commentary sparingly.

I don't understand why you frame your post like that. 40-50 times is limited? Anyways, how do you explain what is displayed in the screenshot above?
