hi all,

we have just made a booking for W in December and was wondering how likely it is to be upgraded on arrival? I'm Bonvoy Gold and booked this holiday with a travel agent since the price was less than 50% of what it costs to book direct and we got free half board with our deal.

we booked an ocean/reef side overwater villa but would prefer to be on the lagoon side... however the price differential from reef to lagoon side is actually obscene considering the room is exactly the same.

we had a booking in march 2020 that got canceled due to covid (which they had upgraded to a lagoon side villa free of charge like 6 months in advance), but not sure if that protocol.

You may get lucky and get upgraded and there is no harm in letting the hotel know your preference, equally if anything they are likely to quote you an upgrade cost.

As its a TA booking your gold status won't help and you won't earn points / nights credits for the stay and technically any Platinum / Titanium and Ambassador guests should get an upgrade ahead of you so I certainly wouldn't get your hopes up. But as they say there is no harm in contacting the hotel maybe in October and ask when at the same time asking any other questions you may have.

Buffet price, happy hour, and pool snacks

Hi everyone,

I am staying at the W Maldives for my honeymoon in late November, and had a couple of questions for recent travelers:

What is the breakfast buffet price? The website says $44 USD, but all the posts I am reading say $31.

Earlier in the thread from late 2020, some people mentioned that the buffet is actually not happening, and you need to order from the menu (still unlimited though). Has this changed back to buffet in 2021?

Happy Hours and snacks were cancelled in late 2020, have those come back yet?

Are the soft drinks and snacks in the room still complimentary, or are those at a charge now too?

I realize that a lot of changes happened due to Covid, but I think Covid has been used as a excuse by a lot of hotels as a means to cut costs and take away things that used to be complimentary.

I hope this isn’t the case here, and W Maldives brings these things back, if they haven’t already!

Thank you in advance!

snorkeling with whale sharks

Anyone try this or anyone who will be there Tuesday Sep 14th interested in trying this? Or more broadly, anyone staying here this Friday through next Thursday who want to coordinate on excursions?

i don't know. it was free due to my bonvoy status.

Earlier in the thread from late 2020, some people mentioned that the buffet is actually not happening, and you need to order from the menu (still unlimited though). Has this changed back to buffet in 2021?

when i was there in May 2021 there was a buffet but you just couldn't pick it your self, only point to it and they would put it on a plate.

not when i was there i May

yes, free (again in May)

it clearly wasn't at the W, only for covid rules they changed things...

i hope you enjoy the W as much as we did. It was by far the best location / room ever to which i traveled. (we stayed in the Wow ocean escape, 2 bedroom villa)..

i did one in May, it was crazy 100+ ppl jumping in the water to see one, always some person stupid enough to touch it and off it went...... ( i would not do it again.)

I also did a private manta swimming tour which is a much shorter boot trip and nobody else will bother you (it was just me, my 2 children and 2 W people). We saw dolphins and could swim with manta's multiple times without anybody else as far as you could see)... (i would do it again multiple times)

Better than the St. Regis? After staying in the St. Regis, I've been itching to go back.

I am communicating with this property regarding an upcoming stay and they are being kind of ridiculous. I am booked to fly home on AF268 which leaves at 9:10AM, which is purposely after the 9AM standard for seaplane flights to Male. The hotel is saying that their seaplane company can't guarantee same day departure and that I should move to a later flight and said that the earliest guaranteed flight is EK657 which is scheduled for...9:15AM. Wow, 5 minutes.

Hoping that once I'm on property I can just get this sorted out without issue. I told the agent via email that they can tell TMA we are booked on the EK flight if it makes things work better.

Well I know nothing about this resort, however when transferring from another resort the plane made a stop at a resort to pick up a few passengers. As one of the passengers was boarding she dropped her cell phone between the plane and the dock. It was in about 10 feet of water and clearly visible. They got someone to dive and retrieve it. I'm sure that took an extra 10 or 15 minutes. Not something I had ever built in to my travel worries before. Just a FYI

I guess it's like anything, there has to be a cut off, if 9.10 was the cut off, what if the flight was 9.05 and so on.

Chances are you will be ok but the resorts have very little input and control on seaplanes. The main thing is the seaplane company do not wish to fly a empty seaplane to W Maldives to pickup 2 people, they want to fly people out and then collect you to take back, possibly stopping at another 1,2 or even 3 resorts to fill up the plane.

It's frustrating and would probably be ok, but the resort isn't going to tell you it's ok if the seaplane operator won't. The biggest issue I can see is if you miss your flight you may have issues claiming on insurance for the costs of the change of flight.

At the W right now. As far as I can tell, no happy hour, no snacks in the huts. Juice soda and water are free in your room. Breakfast I was charged $30 a person inclusive of the taxes and tip. I was expecting 44.

Yes, in September, breakfast was $25 per person. Then they add GST is about 12% and then they add a 10% service fee. We got snacks every afternoon/evening delivered to the room - might be a platinum /titanium amenity.

Yes, I got 20% discount on F&B on anything other than room service back in September.

Thanks for quick replies.

I just booked a 7 nights stay over Christmas. Only Marriott property that can offer water villa and be booked with points. This is the first time a stay includes mandatory gala meal. Has anyone experienced this? How good is it considering the amount they charge, free drink? Thanks!

Ahs anyone visited W recently with kid? I can't remember been charged extra for a kid under 11 when I visited 3 years ago. But after look though this chat saw people mentioned that $220 will be added for a child. I guess that should show up in the total cost when you booking a room given that all other cost like transfer, Christmas event etc are all listed in booking.
