I keep reading about buying a local SIM card at the airport. Is that really necessary? My phone works fine in Europe when I turn on the AT&T International Daypass.

My flight arrives at 3:30, so I'm hearing I may not be able to get the seaplane flight and may have to book speedboat option. Anyone know anything about that? I've emailed a manager, but they aren't always very timely in responding.

I also requested copies of up to date menus from the hotel. All I've gotten back is a QR code for the menus, but it doesn't work. So, wondering if anyone knows what recent menus look like. I've found a few posts with menus here, but the posts were a couple years old and I would assume things have changed.

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Will be there too! Plan on being unreachable so didn't think about the SIM card at all :) They did share latest menus with me (PDFs) so maybe if you request again they will share?

Did you confirm any upgrades already? they confirmed my spectacular villa (hammock) upgrade already - I'm Titanium

We arrived at that time and were able to do seaplane transfer to STR same day with stops to other resorts on the way so I imagine transfer to W same day would be fine too. That is the very latest though that they'll schedule you for same day so any flight delay will be a problem.

Perhaps you can post here the menus you received?

Who's going in April? We are deciding between W and St Regis - know there are a lot of reviews comparing both. For us, saving $1000+ (plane tickets, Food, Scuba costs - all lower at W Maldives + Better house reef) is swinging the pendulum towards the W

We had to make the same decision for our trip in mid April. Chose the St Regis after the rates fell a few weeks ago. Booked 6 nights in an overwater villa for 90k points/night (85k base + 5k upgrade). St Regis also extended the 20% F&B discount for Bonvoy Platinums, so it's really just the seaplane that costs more. Well worth it for a more exclusive/newer resort with better restaurant options in my opinion.

No word on upgrade. I booked two different rooms for our stay using a combo of points/cash. 1/2 week in Spectacular water villa, and 1/2 week in the WOW Ocean Escape.

My wife and I are planning to be in the Maldives for 10 nights (4/15-4/25). We’ll be on points and have platinum status. We’d like to do at least 5 nights at the W because we understand it has a superior house reef. We’re a little concerned that all 10 nights (5 overwater + 5 beach villa since the room itself looks much nicer) at the W would lead to us being a bit bored from only having two restaurants, repetitive activities, etc. As a result, we’re considering doing 5 nights at the W (overwater) + 5 nights at the St. Regis (overwater) in order to take advantage of the St. Regis being a bit nicer, having more variety in food, etc. Hoping the Flyertalk community can help with a few questions:

1) Is there enough variety for 10 nights at the W?

2) Do the snorkel trips from the St. Regis take you to good reefs? Or are these also inferior to the trips the W runs?

3) Has anyone transferred between these properties? How much of the day are we likely to waste with seaplanes/waiting in Male? Do you think it’s worth it to lose this much time switching hotels?

4) The St. Regis has offered chartering the Norma to do the transfer. Anyone done this?

We’re fully vaccinated so we’re not personally very concerned about COVID. Although I am a little worried that a plan to transfer could leave us a bit stranded if the Health Ministry doesn’t approve the transfer (48hours out) due to a positive test at either resort.

I've only stayed at the W, so will answer just #1. I don't think there is enough food variety for 10 nights. My wife and I stayed 5 nights - absolutely loved every second of it - and could've stayed one or maybe two more nights, max. The food was great all around but we did eat just about everything we wanted to over the five nights. Having one of the special dinners would help. (There was a full moon dinner while we were there and there are the private dinner options).

That said, for someone that really wouldn't mind the repetitive food options, and does just want to relax, 10 nights might not be too much. The property is gorgeous (obviously) and super relaxing. There are enough other activities to keep you busy and engaged (scuba, fishing, parasailing, spa).

I was there for 5 nights in November and it was great. But I would suggest to switch to St Regis to switch things up. We switched to Banyan Tree and it was worth it to change the scenery a bit. There are no issues with switching resorts. They take care of everything. It’s also very unlikely the second resort will close due to an active Covid case. They won’t deny you otherwise.

We tried both rooms and found OTW much nicer inside too. So don’t think staying for a beach villa experience is worth it.

The transfer is super easy because they organize everything for you. Don’t overthink it.

anyone stay here while others were in quarantine from anything you’ve heard?

So I am confused by two things:

1) Looking at a half-board package in February. In the rate details it says both:

Offer is fully prepaid, non-refundable and non-cancellable
and

  • You may cancel your reservation for no charge before 11:59 PM local hotel time on January 21, 2022 (30 day[s] before arrival).

So which is it?

2) The Spectacular Overwater is $200 more per day than the Fabulous Overwater - is the only difference between the two really that the Fabulous faces the ocean and the Spectacular faces the Lagoon? Can't you just swim around to the Lagoon?

hdejongh Apr 10, 2021 2:53 am

hello all, i cancelled my st regis 2br beach villa and booked the WOW ocean escape 2 br villa. We will arrive at 2-may-21 and stay 12 days! Coming with my wife and 2 children (9 and 11)..

dcmike Apr 10, 2021 12:19 pm

To answer my questions above -

W Maldives Reservations was very helpful and explained that the rate was prepaid, but could be canceled and refunded up to 30 days before the stay.

And the Spectacular/Fabulous difference is Lagoon (and hammock)/Ocean

Anyone at the resort now? Looks like Lindsay Lohan is there...

dwbpnm Apr 17, 2021 4:56 am

At the W currently. Haven't seen her around though.
