Happy Birthday!! I would have an issue if the water was off. I would also be pissed if they were jackhammering at 8am but other than that I don't think you have a grievance.
|
Sorry you're inconvenienced, but did we really need a new thread on this property?  This is exactly the type of post that should be in the master thread so that people can see the properties performace over a period of time.
Although, it was your birthday, Happy Birthday by the way, as a Gold at a property undergoing renovations, you really shouldn't have expected an upgrade to a suite, however, not being assigned to a clean room is something different. I you did receive a very worm room that is dirty I would ask the hotel to relocate me if possible, if that doesn't work, contact customer service. I suspect there was no glassware because of the recent highlights on poor housekeeping. Please read the separate thread. Amenities? What Amenities are you expecting in your room or do you mean there were no toiletries in the bathroom? |
Thanks for the responses and valuable comments.
I'll have to say, I feel pretty green. The more I travel, the less I check reviews and the more I rely on brand consistency (and perhaps my own laziness). But, I have learned enough from FT that I should know to at least check for master threads. At the end of the day, I should have been suspicious of the rate and should have read the web page in more detail. Next time I will know better. Thanks for the kind wishes and the helpful info! -N |

You really should not have hoped for a repeat of the way the St. Regis DC treated you and your wife. As others noted back then, they were not at all obligated to do those things for you. Live and learn but you should have chalked it up to having lucked out once, when you did not expect it, and that it was pushing it to expect similar treatment two times in a row, no less! Best of luck in your travels, and never, ever, expect consistency among brands -- except for perhaps the highest tier -- and the most expensive room rates booked. Only make an educated surmise for an individual hotel -- from reviews of same posted here and in Tripadvisor.com |

I did not mean to convey a feeling of entitlement, either at the St Reg or here at the Westin. I hope that is not the way my post came across. Things have gotten pretty bad...they are jackhamering right over our two rooms right now. Its too loud for my wife and mother to take a nap (they woke us up at 6am to get started) so we aren't sure what we are going to do. The manager offered 10,000 starpoints, and I guess thats a nice gesture and we should be grateful. I just cannot stomach that I made this choice and they in turn rewarded me with the two rooms RIGHT UNDER the active construction. I booked through SPG.com, and I guess I focused so much on location that I didn't see the "special circumstances" note in small print, but I do see it now and I'll be sure to not be so "quick to click" in the future http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2220/...3d8d9db1c7.jpg Thanks again everyone for the valuable input and help. |

Not a good memory. Just used the search function. However, starting at 6 am? That is ridiculous and against the law, I believe. Second, the hotel cannot possibly be full, so why did they not just move you? I would demand now that you have explained what is going on: 1) Comps for both rooms because of work starting at 6 AM and they did not even move you!! The work clearly is not in compliance with the law because I think municipal regulations require no earlier than a 7 AM start, at best, no way 6 AM. Could they be using illegal labor for this job that is not in compliance with DC work regulations?? ;) 2). Compensation in the way of free nights at the hotel when the work is finished or Starpoints -- you choose. 3). Threaten to contact DC building and SPG over this. This treatment is ridicuolous even though the renovations are clearly listed on the website, nowhere does it state that work begins at 6 AM or that if there is space available to make your stay more convenient and quiet, they still will not move you! Keep us posted!!! |

Keep us posted!!! I agree with all you say except the highlighted portion, since none of us have access to occupancy levels. If they have construction taking place maybe they have rooms blocked off/out of service, so there is the chance that they might not have anywhere to move the OP and friends. Odd, yes, but a possibility. Again, I would contact customer service, immediately. |

Again, I would contact customer service, immediately. If they are full, then I understand their not moving SeaBass -- but really, it is a bit much not to try to accommodate him elsewhere rather than seek to place him in a room directly below the jackhammering and at 6 AM, no less! But you are absolutely correct re their potential to be full up -- even though it is Christmas and I just spend 3 days at 2 different hotels there, the Westin Alexandria twice, and the PH DC, once, and they all were tombs! |
7:45 AM on Saturday- they are working DIRECTLY over my room... we are out of here!
I'll update the thread on my conversation with the manager that I'm going to have in 10 mins... They claim they are full, by the way. When asked why they would book anyone so close to the construction, they told us that the hotel had to have the revenu stream and could not afford not to stay full |
Ask for Frieda Alexander. She was very helpful to us earlier this month. See my post in this thread.

Hotel website says March 2nd they are done with renovations.
Does anyone know if the construction still going on at this hotel? Are there newly renovated rooms that I should try to stay in? |

Trip Report: The Westin Grand, Washington D.C.
Never stayed at this property, but I wanted to check it out as in the past I'd walked past many times en route to Georgetown.
Knowing the property was in the midst of a renovation I really had no "formed" opinion. RANKINGS Check-in/Check-out [2 out of 5] The agent was knowledgeable of the property but had a severe attitude, unfortunate for him, as I have been know to adjust many an attitude! I prefer quiet rooms with lots of light on high floors & he assured me that is exactly what I was getting. He even went so far as to tell me he is putting me into a newly renovated room and I would be the first occupant of that room. Although efficient, I rate this category low because of the agents condescending attitude. Common Areas [5] The circular lobby is compact and well lit, and has a "refreshment station". The business center and restaurants are all of the lobby. The hallways are well lit & "look" clean. They have a bowl of fruit on the table in front of each elevator on each floor. Guest Rooms [5] As indicated I like rooms with lots of light. I was assigned a room that was on a floor that was just released back into inventory and I would be the first new occupant of the room. I walk in and the room has a new carpet mixed with cigar smell. Strike one. I decide to stay, and give my body a minute to adjust, in case my senses are hypersensitive. So, I lock the door and start my normal room inspection. I pull the curtains back, a low and behold, both the windows have long cracks. Strike two. Remember this is newly renovated room. So I call downstairs and let them know the current room is unacceptable. I am transferred back to the front desk and the same agent that checked me in answers and is apologetic and somewhat humble. Two minutes later a new key arrived and the front desk agent in training also thought the smell and the broken windows were unacceptable. The new room, which is also renovated. It has a slightly different layout and the bathroom is configured different. Other than that, the rooms are identical. This room has been back in inventory for a week or two. Overall First Impression: Very Nice, rooms have a retreat like feel. Bed: Awesome! Furniture & Decor: Casual modern. Décor of the room is soothing and is appropriate for its location and the Westin brand. Closet Space: One large armoire. The armoire contains, some drawers, safe [which easy accommodates a laptop ] Iron and ironing board. I found it odd that the luggage rack does not fit in the armoire. TV: Flat panel TV. The channel election was so-so as the new system isn’t fully operational. Lighting: Ample lighting Workspace: Nice desk, yet small as the coffee maker is there. I moved it to the tv, which gave me more room. View: View of 24 street and very sunny. Radio/Audio: Boring clock radio. Starwood needs to upgrade their clocks. Guest Room Bathrooms [5] Nice size bathroom with good counter space, but no double vanity. Sink: Large work surface and good counter space. Enough working space for two people to prepare without bumping into each other. Shower: Single sized shower (some might find it "tight") with heavenly brand showerhead. Good pressure and water temperature. Tub: very comfy oversized deep spa tub Toiletries: Underwhelming Westin heavenly bath products. Housekeeping N/A No issues as I only spent one night in the property. Club Level/Lounge N/A No Fitness Center [1] Medium sized fitness center, decent equipment yet its nearing the end of its life and hopefully the space will be remodeled. This is one of the worse wetin gyms I've seen. Pool [2] Very small pool. Think oversized lap pool. If you have kids its not really the place to bring them as I think they would be disappointed. Business Center [4] Located off the lobby. There are two PCs that have a dedicated printer. The room was never busy when I visited. There is also an ATM machine. Concierge N/A Didn't use, but it appears the front desk staff act as the "concierge". High Speed Wired/Wireless Internet Access [N/A] Free in the lobby. Wired in rooms for a fee. After renovation the property should be wireless as well. Parking/Valet [1] One of the worst experiences upon arrival. The valet area is the size of a postage stamp and the staff was overwhelmed. It was better upon check out but the need to better prepare for the peak periods. Dining [3] I informed Mr. Condescending, that deducting parking and free breakfast would be an appropriate gesture for assigning me a room clearly not ready for occupancy. [Attitude adjustment complete]. The breakfast was nice, service was fast and the dining room bright. Miscellaneous New suites are not available. There will only be 6 suites available in the hotel when the renovation is complete. However, there is not an indication is these will be labeled as “select standard”. Also, this property doesn’t have “extended” kings or rooms that are larger than others, except for one type of double bedded room. My advice is not to book this property expecting or demanding a suite as there are few nor complain that you got a small room as they are all virtually the same size. FINAL IMPRESSION Overall hotel cleanliness: Clean, modern and could be a solid property after the renovation is complete. Staff attitude, conduct & support: The valet and initial room assignment was inexcusable. Everyone else I encountered after was pleasant and helpful Location: Great location with restaurants, shops, drug store and Georgetown and Dupont Circle neighborhoods all within walking distance Would I return?: Yes. Based on price. Would I recommend this as family friendly?: Yes. But not for kids, this property seems to be more a “business” hotel not a leisure property. Good for business travelers?: Yes. Good for a romantic get away?: No, this is more of a business property. Would I recommend for someone looking for Dining/Nightlife? Yes Would I recommend restaurant? Unfair to say “yes” or “no” as I only had breakfast in the restaurant. I didn’t try room service, lunch or dinner. Value for price paid? Good Overall property rating on a scale from 1 to 10 = 6.5 |
