The Ritz is just OK, but not for the price they charge.
Why are you avoiding the Marriott? I have had 3 stays in 2 months here. Great SUG with a SNA. Great M lounge. Busy lobby and great location.

Staying at this property this weekend. The renovation is now nearly complete, some bits of the lobby are still left, but all rooms are done. A flyer handed at checkin says the reno cost 30 million$. Great views from the lobby, my reservation was changed to a river view, but I got a room with a city view. A plat checking in beside me got a breakfast offer ('either do the 15$ buffet or order anything from the menu').

Had two stays here recently. As mentioned above, renos are almost done. Still a small area roped off on the 11th floor lobby and installation has begun to covert the room doors from mag stripe to prox card. (Ran into the weird transition period where two sets of keys were needed - one with mag stripe for the elevator, one with prox for the room.)

Breakfast amenity is still full breakfast. Perfectly fine and up to domestic Westin standards. I needed to run out to a meeting one morning, and they were kind enough to give me a to-go box, utensils, bag, coffee/juice. ^

No suites on first stay, but upgraded to king corner room. Beautiful river views with big windows along two walls. Renovations have given rooms and bathroom a nice facelift, with plenty of outlets next to the beds and on the desk. Very spacious room with open floor plan given they didn't have the square footage to actually furnish it like a suite.

Second stay upgraded to Bienville Suite. Nicely appointed, spacious, plenty of seats - pullout couch, arm chair, desk chair, two upholstered poofs in living room; chaise/daybed in bedroom; two short leather stools at the bathroom vanity counter. (Random note: furniture was quite hefty! The components that made up the coffee table and the side table next to the chaise took a little effort to move around!)

Which did you prefer between the king corner room and the Bienville suite?

If view was important to me, I'd go for the king corner/river view or book one of the river view suites. For pure comfort, I was very happy with my Bienville Suite. I happened to be on the second-highest or third-highest floor, so fairly shielded from external noise (other than boat and train horns). Some properties have suites that seem forced, where the layout just seems...odd. For the Bienville Suite I had, the layout was quite comfortable and navigable. Couch/coffee table and desk placement in living room did not create awkward flow as people moved around. The two swinging doors between living and bedroom areas did not intrude on decor or flow when they were opened. Closet, vanity, bathroom layout allowed for several people to be using the space without being overly cramped.

Tl;dr: I prefer a comfortable working and resting environment during my stays, so I would pick the Bienville Suite.

King corner for me. View >>> all else, personally.

The elevators leave much to be desired at this property. We had a conference at this venue (couple hundred people) and lines would wrap around the room.

Westin New Orleans

Booked a 5 night stay end of Dec at this hotel with some friends. Wondering how this hotel handles elites? Breakfast? Lounge? I have applied my SNAs but I doubt they will go thru during December so I am not too concerned.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Enjoyed the Westin more than the JW (especially as it was less than half the price).

Only upgraded to a River View King (FDA said no suites available), but the room is attractive with lots of furniture options (including chaise lounge) and a lot of table/desk space. Bed is comfortable with full Heavenly duvet. Attractive and premium finishings (crown molding, tiled foyer, etc.). Nice walk-in shower. Enjoyed watching the container ships and cruise ships pass by, and was not disturbed by noise overnight.

Breakfast was shocking - there is grab-and-go at the bar or the full restaurant. At least, during the week, the restaurant was a la carte. I was advised to order whatever I wanted, so I ordered the pancakes and a side of bacon. The pancakes said "5" on the menu, so I expected mini pancakes. Nope, I received 5 full-size pancakes. The server and I both bust out laughing, and I now have a to-go box full of pancakes in my room :-) Service in the restaurant was very friendly.

Personally, the elevator situation here is a big plus for me - the Canal Place glass elevators are quite fun. However, I do feel like the architecture basically ensures that there isn't a bad view in the whole hotel.

Overall, I would definitely recommend the Westin.

Stayed here Dec 27 - Jan 1

2 families traveling together, 3 rooms booked on points (145k for 5 nights), two PLT and one Titanium. Titanium and Platinum member each had applied for SNA upgrades to the river view suite or bienville suite. PLT gets his upgrade to go thru 5 days before while titanium gets an upgrade from city view to river view. In the end, it worked out since we needed two rooms to be connecting which the hotel did for us at check in. I got to stay in the suite while other family choose to stay in the connecting rooms. The suite is very spacious but needs another bathroom (at least a toilet and sink) in the other room.

Late checkout offered till 330pm as the hotel was at capacity with a MNF game on Monday when we checked in and then of course, New Years and a Sugar Bowl game.

WiFi is super slow so I just used my 5G in the room. Son wasn’t happy with the WiFi speed stating that his games would slow down on his iPad. I checked the speed and it never went above 5mbps.

Breakfast coupons given at check in to use at the restaurant or the grab n go counter but I don’t know how that works. We ate breakfast at the restaurant the first two days only as we got busy with tours the other days. The first day was a complete and utter failure of the restaurant. One server working, full restaurant and food took forever to come out. Eventually, they had to call down some management people to help out. With the coupon, you are allowed to order one item off the menu, coffee and orange juice is free. Everything else is charged. The food tastes good and is a decent quantity. The next morning, the restaurant learnt from its previous mistake and just switched to a buffet. Scrambled eggs, grits, oatmeal, fresh fruits, crispy potato cubes, sausage and bacon. This works for us but I would like to have an option for more veggies but being that this is the USA, I can’t complain.

Hotel worked out great for us since it is away from the French Quarter but still not too far from the action. We walked to a lot of places and we used UBER the whole time. No need to rent a car and pay outrageous daily parking fees and with the street construction, it was headache free not having to drive.

Rooms were of good quality, housekeeping service is pretty quick and the front desk took care of the requests as per I needed.

Does this hotel charge a destination/resort fee? I have a reservation that doesn't show a breakdown, just estimated taxes and fees for the stay, and when I compare it to estimated taxes and fees in a boutique hotel, it looks like the Westin is charging a *small* junk fee (under $5 per night).

BTW, when I clicked through to apply SNAs to my reservation, some of the choices were NOT suites or even upgrades. For example, I could use SNAs to go from a 1K room to a 2Q room of the same "category" that was selling for exactly the same price. Yet, when I scrolled through the list, some genuine suites could be checked, including at least one category that I suspect was not a standard suite. Be careful.

Does this hotel have a lounge? What Elite perks are there, sounds like breakfast is included, anything else?

Also, is it considered a convention hotel or anything that will prevent 4pm checkout?
