This one is moving back to Category 3. It may take some time for all our systems to be synchronized to show this.

That is unfortunate. Can hotels/SPG just change categories whenever they feel like it now? I thought it was once a year and members were given advanced notice...

I only have this to offer from the Terms and Conditions of membership in Starwood Preferred Guest:

3.2.d. The amount of Starpoints needed to obtain rooms at SPG Participating Hotels varies by the category of the SPG Participating Hotel and may also vary by time of year. A list of SPG Participating Hotel categories is available on the SPG Program website (www.spg.com) under "Hotel Categories". Starwood may change the category in which a specific SPG Participating Hotel is classified at any time.

That's a shame as it was a very good value as a Cat 1 property.

I just recently took advantage when it was reasonable:
Number of Starpoints redeemed: 1,500
Stay Dates: 28-MAR-2013 through 29-MAR-2013
Hotel: Sheraton Baltimore North Hotel

Makes me wonder if SPG doesn't drop some hotels on the yearly list just to say "Look- not so bad!" only to raise them again later. It would be interesting if someone had the time to do a retrospective comparison.

I would have stayed there again in the future but not at a category 3.

My thoughts:
-Should of only been raised to category 2. It's not a Cat 3, but a Cat 2 type property. Cat 1 was a good deal.
-Shady how awards were missing as Cat 1, but back as a Cat 3
-Thank you Lurker for the advance notice!

and... Is it normal for hotels to petition that gets lowered? Did any properties that got higher Categories asked to be dropped back? :-)

I was planning a stay there next week at Category 1, but not at Category 3. Oh well. This came as a surprise to me.

Any stays here recently? Are there restaurants nearby? Is parking still free here?

Also - anyone used the Birth Year Offer here? Their "offers" page shows it as available and good for 2nd and 3rd nights. However when I go to book - the rate description states 2nd night only. Not a good deal if they are excluding the 3rd night.

I've stayed there a couple times in the last few months. Hotel itself is an ok Sheraton. Rooms are clean, beds are comfy, I've never been bothered by noise but the hotel sure could use a refresh. Parking is not free, but rather $10 or so per night in the adjacent garage.

Skybridge over to the Towson Town Center Mall with high-end shops, Stoney River Steakhouse, Cheesecake Factory and P.F. CHangs.

To be frank though (my brother lives in Towson) there are much better restaurants a decent walk (or short and cheap Uber) away. My favorite restaurant in all of Towson is the 7W Bistro. My brother and I eat there nearly every time I visit. Orient Restaurant for much better Chinese than P.F. Changs. Both of these are about 1/2 mile away from the hotel.

If you're into the Bar scene, the Charles Village Pub and Patio has decent food and an excellent bar.

I've also enjoyed Strapazza (Italian), Cunningham's (Wood FIred Oven and Grill - Service is really hit or miss but food is good),

Hope this helps.

Wonderful! Thanks for the restaurant ideas. I've been staying over in Pikesville at the Doubletree (which is closer to where I need to be). But I thought I might give the Sheraton a try to see what it's like. There are almost no good restaurants in Pikesville except for Mari Luna Latin Grill. Will be nice to try some new spots.

Annoying that they ding us for parking though
