$75 fee for early check-in?

This is a new one my wife encountered today. Arrived at her hotel a few hours early and they said her room wasn't ready. But it (or another) can be ready for a nominal fee of $75. This brand never ceases to amaze me.

She said no thanks and did some work in lobby for a couple hours then got into her room.

Hotel name/location?

This is normally only something seen in Vegas with 'early check in' fees...

How early relative to the normal check-in time? What is a few hours?

Aloft Philly Downtown. It was 3.5 hours early. She did get upgraded though once her wait was over!

The hotel owners must be networking on how to extract more cash from customers.

I had an experience on a Hilton property a while back where I was offered the early check-in option for a fee as being discussed here. I didn’t have any status at Hilton then so didn’t think much of it and wrote it off as one of the downsides of being a lowly member of the chain.

FWIW, in a lot instances the same franchisee can own hundreds of properties with all of the major parent companies which is why you could have as an example, one RI not pushing this fee or maybe charging for parking but another one in the same area will.

Upgraded to what? Does the Philly aloft have any genuine suites?

Also, Bonvoy status?

The app said "You've been upgraded." I don't think it was anything special, just another king room with a little extra nook area for a desk.
Status = Titanium.

I didn't consider the franchisee part of it. That could be it.

I don't use the app at all, but do check-in online in the Marriott website. There is an option to change the check-in time on that, so I chose 14:00 for a hotel for tomorrow. I've never stayed at an Aloft, but did her reservation not have that feature? The times go down to very early in the day.

That would be the last time I ever stayed at the property, and I would also call this extremely noxious practice out in a T/A review.

Early check-in fees are fairly common and have been around for awhile, especially at airport hotels. A couple I'm aware of are the Sheraton AMS and Marriott CDG - each at 50 Euro for check-in "as early as 10am". The latter can actually be pre-booked as a special rate.

changing the time is a request not a guarantee that it will be accomodated.
