YouTube 11:42 video. Tells the inspiring story of Bill Marriott (born 1900), and his Hot Shoppe restaurant chain in WAS. Post-war, he got into airline catering.

In 1957 he opened the first motel at DCA, which his son Bill, Jr. soon took over and grew into the chain we know today.

I don't believe their original root beer stand was affiliated with A&W. What is your is your source that it was?

If you‘re interrested in the history of the company, you should read „Spirit to serve“. 20 years back, you could find it in any Marriott room next to the bible. It‘s a great little book with some nice insight.
