Moving points between accounts (General Discussion Thread)

One of the biggest benefits for keeping the SPG card and staying SPG focused, was the ability to transfer points between members of the same household. Is that great benefit now dead? Thanks for your help and if I missed some informative thread on the subject, please re-direct me.

The new loyalty program terms and conditions suggest this is still possible:

2.8 Transferring Points from One Account to Another

2.8.a. In accordance with the conditions for transferring Points as described in Section1.6.c. Members can transfer up to a maximum of 50,000 Points per calendar year between any two accounts in good standing that have each been open for at least sixty (60) days, whether sending or receiving Points.

2.8.b. A new Member may receive a Points Transfer thirty (30) days after enrollment if the Account reflects activity including a Qualifying Stay or other qualifying activity as described in Section 1.6.d. After ninety (90) days from enrollment, a new Member is eligible to receive a Points Transfer regardless of their account activity.

2.8.c. Once per calendar year and only at the time of an Award Redemption, a Member may exceed the 50,000 Point maximum into the Loyalty Program account of a friend or family member in order to qualify for a specific Award in accordance with this section. In the instance of transfer exceeding the 50,000 Point maximum only the necessary number of Points needed to redeem the specified Award, rounded to the nearest 1,000 Points, may be transferred - no more, no less.

2.8.d. Authorization to transfer Points must be initiated by the Account holder with the Points to be transferred by contacting Member Support. The Account holder requesting the transfer must provide the Membership Number of the Points recipient at the time of the Point transfer request.

2.8.e. Once the authorization for transfer is received and processed, the transferor relinquishes all rights to the transferred Points, and they become the recipient’s Points.

2.8.f. Miles and Elite Night Credit cannot be transferred between Membership Accounts.

Thanks for the quick reply Famous William (Famous as in I've read your comments for many years...but never actually had contact so it feels celebrity-like)

So. I loose .2 points in the transfer?

Thanks to the advise received on this forum, I made all the necessary transfers before August.

But now I'm thinking into the future (and also if I change my primary hotel CC after 17 years!). William, do you have any idea if this benefit will continue after this year?

With the above, two family members can each transfer 40,000 MRs to me for the calendar year? When I was last with Marriott reward rep, she said the receiving member can't receive more than 50,000 total MRs. So I figure she is incorrect.

Okay. After re-reading William's post, I get the feeling that is will be a continuous thing that is now implemented into the new program. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

No, but I'm not sure why it would go away.

Share Marriott Rewards Points Between Domestic Partners

I'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, I did my best to search for it but couldn't find my scenario since the merger.

My fiancee and I are using points to book our honeymoon at the Hotel Punta Islita in Costa rica, an Autograph Collection property. To begin with, she has gold elite status and I have silver, so we decided she should book. Her account was short about 90,000 points, so I called to transfer the maximum 50,000 per year (I hope that wasn't a mistake).

I've read that if you use the points to immediately book a reward, you can exceed the annual limit. But I've also read that this policy has changed since the merger. What is the procedure for this, if it is still allowed? Do we book on her account and receive an e-certificate so that once there are enough points in her account, the booking is completed? Then I call and transfer the needed points from my account explaining that the maximum should be disregarded because we are using the points immediately for a reservation? Or do we transfer the points first? If this is no longer the rule, does 50,000 per year mean per calendar year (I can transfer 50,000 more in 2019) or anniversary year of the account?

Thanks for the help

Rule is now 100k per year, no fee for any member (not that the $10 was charged before even though they could), but no longer can go over for an award. It's in the T&C on the new program. The member that is transferring OUT the points calls in, asks to transfer 100k, gives the account number of the receiving member, and its done. No award redemption is necessary.

When you call in it still lists off the old T&Cs. I just transferred 100k this morning without a fee. Took about 7 minutes, 5 of which were listening to the prerecorded prompts go on and on with outdated information.

Thanks, this is where I was confused. I heard the recorded message say 50k too. I even asked the agent and she told me the maximum is 50k! Oh well, I am going to transfer the rest needed for our honeymoon and book!

Moving points between household accounts (General Discussion Thread)

Title says it all really.

Looking to move points as in the past but only see option that requires calling Marriott.

Is this the case now?

You used to be able to do it on line before the merger.

Thanks for any replies,

The ability to move points through an online/website transfer request to another account within your house was an SPG website benefit. Marriott's process has always required someone to go through an agent. And since the Marriott website is the one in use, that process has won out. I definitely liked being able to submit the transfer request directly from the website and had hoped that maybe Marriott would add that feature, but it doesn't look like that will be the case.

Yep - I discovered this a few months ago when I wanted to transfer some points from hubby's account. It's very annoying to have to call for such a simple request.

Thank you hhoope01 and Low Roller for your replies.

I didn't think of it as having being an SPG feature and assumed it was done like that at Marriott also.

Guess I'll be calling in!

Thanks,
