Effective 14 Sept 2019 from VFTW:

Points advance locks in the room not the rate.

Effective September 14 pricing that will apply to points advance bookings will be the current price at the time the member actually redeems points to cover the reservation. This will no longer be a way to lock in current pricing on the if-come. And with high season dates, which can change each month, the price of the room may vary up until the time of redemption.

Marriott tells me that for reservations made prior to September 14 they will honor up to 5 points advance bookings at the standard rate even if those reservations fall on a peak date.

From Marriott email:
Starting September 14, You will be permitted a maximum of three Points Advance reservations at any time
Before September 14, please take the following steps to reduce your Points Advance reservations to adhere to the upcoming policy.
Cancel any remaining Points Advance reservations or convert them to a paid rate.
If you’re unable to complete this before September 14, we’ll contact you at the phone number listed in your account to help you resolve any excess reservations.
For Points Advance reservation(s) made before September 14 only: When you redeem, if any night has a Peak rate, call us and we’ll adjust the night to its Standard rate. If you need to change your reservation, you’ll receive the available redemption rate when you rebook
From Marriott Lurker: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/31525589-post1.html
As a reminder, any reservations booked with points made prior to today will remain at the reserved Standard redemption rate. However, if you need to change that reservation, you may see a new redemption rate when you rebook. If the hotel you booked moves into Off-Peak, you can rebook at the new, lower redemption rate and then cancel the original reservation (standard cancellation time periods apply).

Maximum of 3 Points Advance bookings at a time
Marriott will be updating their terms to limit members to three points advance bookings at a time. Expect to hear from Marriott if you make a bunch of points advance reservations.

I never understood why Marriott accounting works this way. In SPG, you'd see a line item for every plus or minus transaction.

Just called in trying to fulfill a point advance reservation made before September 14 for a stay next year. The points required for the stay have gone up after September 14. The agent said while the reservation will be honored at the standard rate that the original reservation was booked for, they cannot make the adjustment until one week before the stay. Is this total BS, or do I really have to wait until the week before my stay to have them honor the pre-9/14 standard rate?

I had a PA reservation for next summer made before Sep 14. It is now at a higher peak rate. I contacted my Ambassador, and within 1 day they deposited an extra 40K points -- I then went ahead and funded the stay at the higher rate.

So none of this "wait until a week before stay"...

Only gotcha i can see is that there was nothing preventing me from just keeping the 40K points and cancelling the PA reservation.

Thanks. I just sent a PM to Marriott Lurker and it was taken care of right away. So definitely kudos to Marriott Lurker. I still can't believe out of the five Marriott agents I talked on the phone, two of them hadn't even heard of PA reservations and instead asked me if I would like to cancel my reservation because I did't have enough points...

I had an issue with advance reservation I made prior to September 14th. I have reached out to Marriott reward customer service and got an additional points to cover the difference. But my resorts fees went up as well. I compared it to my original booking details and it is well off after pick rate went in effect. It is over hundred dollars.

Any advice how to handle this?

Hi bilot,

We would like to help look into the resort fee issue with the hotel if you could forward your original reservation confirmation email to us.

I have a reservation coming up at the St. Regis Deer Valley on a points advance that I booked in February on a whim. I am pretty sure it was at 60k per night but I never received an email confirming -- it just showed up in my account. Back in February the St. Regis Deer Valley should have been a Cat 7, then in went up to Cat 8 (85k) and now up to Peak Cat 8. When I go online it says I will need 200k points for the two nights.

Am I correct that I should be able to call in and get the stay adjusted to the 60k/night rate I originally booked?

EDIT: I called once and got a similar answer that I needed to call back closer to the date, which I wasn't willing to do because the hotel has a much earlier cancellation policy and I didn't want to get stuck either cancelling or buying a bunch of points. I reached out to @MBOnvoyAssist on Twitter and they went ahead and made the redemption then credited me with the difference, so it all worked out well.

I had made a reservation at a hotel back in February for a stay at the end of December using the point advance. I finally had the 200k points required so I called in since the property is now 260k points, after about 30 minutes bouncing between people I finally got someone who would add 60k points to my account and take the points for the reservation. That all went through and then this morning I get an email from the hotel saying "unfortunately, we do not have any access as to how many points are necessary to order an e-certificate."

The website shows that the reservation has an e-certificate attached but how can I be sure everything went through?

Just noticed I can't make a Points Advance reservation with less than a month prior to my arrival as well - is this new? I don't see this in the program's terms and conditions.

So I have a Points Advance reservation at Hotel Pitrizza next summer and I received a long email from them this morning basically telling me to confirm the reservation or cancel.

This is clear violation of the letter and spirit of Points Advance. Should I see if they cancel and then go through Marriott CS (ugh) or would any Lurker like to look into this now. The germane portion of the email is as follows

The Costa Smeralda Luxury Collection Hotels are summer resort properties and due to the high demand especially during this peak season period we cannot keep unguaranteed reservations.

Do you have a credit card on file for your MR account? I assume you do. E.g. the credit card would be the guarantee for your reservation (just like any other reservation). If not, that may be what they are after. More likely it is how you are interpreting it and they don't want to honor the points advance reservation. Stick to your position and hopefully The Lurkers will proactively engage to assist you.

Indeed, have CC on file. The fact that it is a Points Advance is what they take issue with. Here's another snippet from the long email
Your reservation is not yet guaranteed as your points have not been deducted for your booking made in September of one garden view classic double room with balcony for 2 persons ...we cannot keep unguaranteed reservations.
