Adding Marriott # mid-reservation?
My in-law's house is being remodeled due to a plumbing issue and their insurance company is putting them up in a hotel (Residence Inn) while the remodel is in process. By the time we're done it will be a little over 60 nights in the hotel. Since they don't care about the miles and points world (and I do!), I went with them over the weekend to add my name as a second guest and also added my Marriott number so I can hopefully get the nights credited to my account. Front desk said the number was added successfully but who knows what will actually happen in the end. The charges are all being master billed to the insurance company so no double dip opportunity here by also offering to pay on my SPG Amex/get reimbursed.
That said, has anybody had experience adding a loyalty number mid-reservation as a second guest and having the stay/night credits post successfully? I'm doubtful any points will credit since it's a master bill/negotiated long-term stay rate situation. FWIW I don't see any updates in my Marriott account for the current stay or anything to indicate I'm "staying" at that hotel. Therefore I'm not sure if everything will correctly post upon checkout in a few weeks. Also, I don't know if all the IT issues surrounding the merger are impacting/will impact our situation either.
Any thoughts or prior experience in a situation like this?

In order to earn the night counts and points, you would have to be the reservation holder. Adding your name and membership number as a second guest will not entitle you to earn those.

Apologies for necroposting, thought it was better than starting a new post.
I have a similar dilemma. A friend booked (directly with Marriott) a couple of rooms for a trip; so the rooms are technically in his name and I am an additional guest. I went to the FD earlier today and asked to add my number to my room. The FD gladly did it.
Question: Will it sync up to MARSHA so that it shows as a current stay in the app or do I just hope they did it right and I will get the credit. It is a 7-night stay, so I do want them to credit 🙈

Unless the reservation is updated to be properly in your name it shouldn't really post (it may, but not guaranteed - a basic name check would be a minimum step from Bonvoy). To have certainty on this you'd need the room to be updated in your name fully (which as long as your friend is fine with), which should be easy for the front-desk to do. In fact when booking multiple rooms I normally have the opposite problem - i.e. the front desk adds the guest names from passports/IDs, which causes problems with posting and I need to retro-claim.
Note, your friend may have hoped to get the extra points credit through this route as it is odd that they just add you as a second guest - whether they deserve it or not is another matter - to my mind, if you are paying for the room (another Marriott Bonvoy check/requirement is that you make the payment with your card), then you should be entitled to the points/nights credit.
If you aren't paying for the room, and you remain as only a named guest, then in theory it should not post - and there should be no route for a retro-claim. If you pay, and are the named first guest, it should post and if it doesn't then you could do a retro-claim with the receipt easily too.

He's not paying, he merely did the bookings. The FD said it was under both of our names but was missing my Bonvoy profile. She also thanked me for being Titanium which I took it as a signal that it was correctly added. We shall see then.
