Lots of ongoing action in this thread, probably better to ask there instead of trying to revive a four year old thread from the dead, especially post-COVID (which really materially has changed things).

The service & quality are similar at both properties, with a nudge to the Ritz since it is typically quieter and more discreet, but the locations are quite different. The hard product, decor, and F&B at the St. Regis are slicker and more modern, and property is a bit livelier overall.
Ultimately, it sort of depends on the purpose of your visit? Touristy sightseeing? Hitting SF's best restaurants, bars, etc? Museums, theaters, Ballparks, etc (St. Regis+)? Walkability / safety of the neighborhood (Ritz+)?
The St. Regis is in a busier, noisier corridor (3rd St) in SF's SoMa neighborhood which is flat without hills. Some great restaurants & cocktail bars within walking distance, plus SF MOMA next door.
The Ritz feels more tucked away and you may likely see less street / homeless people, given the hilliness of the area. Shorter walk to Union Square for shopping, close to Chinatown & North Beach neighborhoods for more restaurant & bar options.
Can't go wrong with either one if the rates, room types are similar. If you have status, likelihood of upgrade / elite treatment better at St. Regis.
Two other non-Marriott properties I like in SF are the Fairmont (love the location) and Four Seasons Embarcadero.
