Points earning at restaurants

One of the nice but often overlooked benefits of SPG is the ability to earn at restaurants. Marriott doesn't allow this. What happens post-August?

Same question applies to SPG Cravings discounts, of which Marriott has no equivalent.

Not sure what you're referring to but food/bar spend at JW/Marriott/Ren/Autograph has always counted for points.

The SPG Cravings program looks nice but didn't see a lot of options. There are some legacy Marriott properties that give plat guests discounts but don't know I've seen a consolidated list.

Yeah OP has it exactly backwards. SPG is much tighter at crediting on-property spend than Marriott (where pretty much everything usually counts). Hope that changes come August. I have a stay at SGS ending on August 5 and it would be really nice to have more than 60% of my total bill accrue points (currently spa, car service, and most restaurant spend is excluded - all would count at a Marriott).

I think OP was asking about restaurant spend when you’re not staying at the property. We eat regularly at our local W and get SPG points for the bill (with usually exceptions, like no points for alcohol in California). You have to have them fill out a form, but we find it easier to just send a copy of the receipt to the SPG research email address. Points usually post in a few days.

So I’m also wondering if this benefit will continue under the combined Marriott system? It’s not a huge number of points, but over a year of eating out at local Starwood property restaurants, it adds up!

I believe there are Marriott programs like that in Asia but haven't seen them in a while. Many years ago, I recall a BOGO dinner program for Plats at Marriott even when you weren't a guest that I used once at a place with a good restaurant.

Every reason to believe this will end when Starpoints do.

Thanks for clarifying.

True, when one is staying at those Marriott brands and charges F&B to the room. However, SPG gives points on F&B (in principle, the test is whether you could have charged the bill to your room, so some restaurants that merely rent space in the hotel but are operated independently are excluded) when you're not a hotel guest.

Indeed - I meant restaurant spend incurred when not staying at the hotel.

Indeed, we eat at Starwoods all the time even when we are not staying at property -- it is nice to get plat discount and points. I hit a Sheraton Grand near my home about once a week. We have never gotten any points at any Marriott we also frequent for meals. Discounts yes most of the time, but points no. I actually cut down dining at a Marriott near my home because after the merger they institutionalized the discounting they said. Before they gave me 50% discount on Sunday buffet since I was a long-time regular customer which was an incredible deal... now only 20%

William has already confirmed in the wiki that this is not going away.

I have a somewhat related question: do the SPG discounts of up to 30% apply regardless of whether or not you are staying at the hotel? I’ve only asked for it a couple times when I was not a guest, and both times the restaurant denied my request.

When you were denied your request was this a breakfast? Breakfast is specifically excluded in the T&C of the program.

The T&C of the program do not say the SPG member must be a guest of the hotel in order to receive the discount.

This benefit will end when the programs are combined.

So I just found out about accruing Starpoints for dining. I ate a few bucks (~$110 or so) worth of food and drinks at the FLL W last week but now all I have are my charge receipts copies. Would those be enough to send in (presumably scan then E-mail) to get credit?
