Yes, the receipt is fine. You don't absolutely need the official form.

kennycrudup Jul 19, 2018 9:10 pm

Thank you. I'll E-mail the receipts to research@ right away.

Wouldn't you need the itemized receipt and not just a credit card receipt which is what OP has?

Didn't think about that, and when I get home I'll check, but I'm pretty sure there's an order number/sequence number on the CC duplicates that could be used to determine my actual order.

... I hope!

I would be surprised that this would be an issue if the name of the restaurant on the credit card receipt matches the name of a hotel's participating restaurant. But, YMMV.

I have received points based on credit card receipts; however, I believe those receipts indicated the same cardholder name as the account.

That's good to know. I wasn't sure because I thought you wouldn't get points for the taxes and most credit card receipts show only the total and the tip.

Points Scrounger Jul 20, 2018 10:09 pm

The system accounts for (deducts) the taxes when Research enters the pre-tip amount on the credit card slip as a valid dine. The credited points should reflect the menu price (only).

In the UAE there is something called “MI Cravings” I assume “Marriott int. Craving” https://www.micravings.com/summer/uae
which gives a good discount at restaurants (SPG and Marriott) even when not staying there. However no points mentioned indeed .

It could be an issue in jurisdictions that prohibit earning points on alcohol.

When I joined Starwood, I was surprised to see that they do not give points on alcohol in a handful of jurisdictions. Surprisingly, all other chains that I have ever stayed with in those jurisdictions are fine with it, including Marriott.

So ... do I understand I can scan the credit card receipt for meals and get points even at properties that don't give discounts? Where do I send them?

For example, I've had dinners in the past month at the LA Prime at the DTLA Westin and at the Nines at PDX that I didn't charge to a room. Neither of those are listed in the program as giving discounts.

Getting points and giving discounts are two different programs. Getting points at a Starwood hotel's restaurant, even when not staying, has long been a facet of the SPG program. It is going away in August when the loyalty programs are combined. The discounts were given through the SPG Cravings program. Starwood Lurker indicated that properties which gave these discounts will continue to be able to offer such discounts, if they so choose.

True, when one is staying at those Marriott brands and charges F&B to the room. However, SPG gives points on F&B (in principle, the test is whether you could have charged the bill to your room, so some restaurants that merely rent space in the hotel but are operated independently are excluded) when you're not a hotel guest.

I noted in a recent SPG stay that the folks at checkin told me that I could only charge things to my room at certain restaurants at the property.

Thanks ... that makes sense. So, is there a way to get credit for places I recently ate at? Also, how do I get credit at restaurants if not staying there. Just give them my SPG number?

In most cases, there would be a triplicate carbon form that the hotel retains to have the points credited; you would get the blue customer copy to submit if necessary. One hotel restaurant claimed that they were an independent outfit, so I took my receipt directly to the front desk where they were able to generate the claim form for me, with the points posting promptly.

if you have receipts for past dining when you were not a guest, you would send an email to research atsign Starwoodhotels, header Missing Dining Points, attaching scans/photos of receipts. Sample message ...

Hi,

On this date I dined at (restaurant) at (property) and have not received any points credit in my account. I have attached copies of the receipt. Thank you for your assistance.

Points Scrounger
SPG# (yours)

Takes a week or so to hear back, usually they send a reply email confirming the points.

Good luck!
