Horrible stay!

Just completed a 5 night stay. What a waste of a nice property with so much promise!

Day #1 Our room had so many issues. The water pipes in the bathroom vibrated all night. It was like a jackhammer in our room. We tried calling the front desk and every other extension without anyone answering our call. We finally gave up! The next morning we tried calling again and again no answer. I finally called from my cellphone and someone answered. I explained the issue with our room... No apology or anything. We were told that a manager would call us right back. After taking about 30 minutes to get ready for breakfast... No call back. So we stopped by the front desk before breakfast and were promptly moved to a new room. The room itself was terribly dirty and just happened to have the door to the stairwell right in the alcove going into our room. Amazing! The elevators were either slow or not working so the door going into the stairwell would slam shut all day and night. I guess nobody sleeps in the hotel... I know that we didn't! We didn't bother saying anything.

Breakfast was ok... It took at least 10 minutes to get seated with nobody ahead of us. Service at the table was extremely slow... We had to ask for a waiter after another 10 minute wait. Service at breakfast was slow throughout our stay. The food was ok but portion size and ingredients changed daily. We did receive a $15 credit per person as a platinum gift.

The pool was a joke! The first day we used the pool was a Thursday. They were grossly understaffed! They ran out of towels by noon. Service at the bar took 20+ minutes to get a drink! There was no table service at the bar or pool. Unbelievable! Spring break and there were 3-4 people working the pool area. I felt bad for the workers... You could tell they were stressed out! The resort lost so much money in f & b sales.

The fitness center had similar issues. No towels and no water cups.

Friday at the pool was much better staffed and had good service.

Saturday was another shocker. The resort that charges a $35 resort fee decided to charge $20 for lounge chairs next to the pool. Unbelievable! You can't staff properly mid-week yet you decide to charge $20 on top of the joke of a resort fee for a chair next to the pool. The same chairs we sat in the day before that were free!

To sum up our experience... The resort is poorly managed. The entire facility was filthy. Not just old and worn but dirty! Hallways had trash on the floors for days on end. Even the restaurant was filthy! Don't sit outside unless you like bird poop on your cushions. We tried to flip the cushions over but they were covered in poop as well.

I'm completely shocked at how truly bad the service and facilities were at this property. I've stayed here before and it was way better than this. Starwood has their work cut out for them.

dqdude, the experience you describe is similar to my 2 stays at the hotel. It's really so sad. The remodel of the hotel was so beautifully done, and I think that the property just has so much potential.

Here is my read of the situation: I think that they had the very bad fortune of going into the remodel right before the recession hit in 2008. They opened the gorgeous new property in the height of the recession and so they had to give huge discounts just to stay open. I don't think they ever recovered from this, and have just become a cheap property with some expensive furnishing. Honestly, I think they should completely close, hire a fully new staff, do a really good refresh to the 2008 remodel, and try to start over again. There are so many good ingredients, most of all the beautiful mid-century modern property. One significant issue is that they don't cater at all to the gay community, and the gay community from Los Angeles is who spends money in Palm Springs.

Update

I wanted to post an update to my previous post.

I opened a case against the Riviera for overcharging me and for all of the previous listed issues. The Riviera had 5 days to respond. I'm not surprised that they didn't respond given my experience at the property. I had also left a message for the management prior to making a complaint to Starwood. Again... No response. Clearly the issues start at the top. The management is incompetent. I would warn anyone against staying here.

On a positive note... Starwood did issue a refund for the overcharges and compensated me with points for the other issues.

Hopefully new management will come in and fix this place. The potential is there for this to be a great addition to Starwood.

Would you mind explaining what this means? Is there an official process for "opening a case" against a Starwood hotel with Starwood corporate? How did you initiate this?

Maybe Starwood should have a trial period before full SPG membership?

Perhaps Starwood should have a trial period before full SPG membership by these previously independent Tribute properties?

- SPG Gold/Platinum carpet and sign at desk, yet zero management of the long line at check-in to pull over Gold/Platinum members.

- Had 2 back-to-back reservations: checkin agent said she'd link them. Unsure about needing new keys 2nd day. Turns out I did, and despite her saying she linked them, no housekeeping but knock on door wondering why room wasn't vacant.

- Deluxe Bath amenities? I've never heard of Zents (made by Hunter Amenities in Canada), and all you get is a tiny bar of soap + shampoo + conditioner + lotion. No body wash, no mouthwash, not even cotton swabs. If Riviera thinks this is 'deluxe' I can't imagine what they would call The Parker's truly 'fab' selection?

- Resort Fee: The Starwood Tribute brand managers approved this? Not even a small bottle water is included. Weekend newspaper = 'weekend' USA Today. Apparently you need to request the local paper ahead of time and they will go out and get it. No option to even purchase the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, etc. at the gift shop. Lame and disingenuous that they even mention newspaper as part of the resort fee.

- Everyone gets the same 5 Mbps wireless internet (no hard lines), no option to pay for premium nor is there a premium option for SPG Platinum members. And of course they have no clue about an 'alternative amenity' since internet is part of the resort fee.

All that said, the physical property is gorgeous and all of the restaurant & bar staff were helpful, friendly and very engaged. Food and beverage is high quality so there are many positives of Riviera. The FO Manager is new, and from another SPG property so I have high hopes she will help shake things up.

Despite so many issues, part of my problems may be mine with 2 different reservations and booking same day, so I will try this property again and report back with any improvements.

Very similar issues here on a points stay last Saturday night.

On the plus side , nice outreach from the concierge prior to the stay, and a nice personal apology from management right after the stay when I answered honestly in response to the survey I received after checkout. I also received a nice refund of points even though I did not ask for or expect anything.

As noted above, one of the main issues is the cleaning and housekeeping. The decor is stylish and trendy but the room and hallways felt dirty. The carpet appeared to have not seen a vacuum in a long time.

Check in could also use some improvement. I waited 15 minutes and the line was not long at around 3:30 in the afternoon. There is an elite check in spot but you can't get to it from where they have you enter the line up. Front desk agent was friendly and did recognize plt status and offer points or breakfast credit. Was told I was upgraded to a junior suite, which was just a room, but a large one with a large bath with soaking tub, two sinks and a shower that overlooked a stucco wall.

When I got to the room I heard a noise and discovered a worker fixing the toilet paper holder which appeared to have been ripped from the wall during a party. He was friendly, but I was surprised he was there, and he was surprised they let someone in the room. The safe was locked and could not be opened, and there were little housekeeping details like that.

I did not try the food, but the drink menu at the bar was interesting and the help was prompt and friendly.

The gym was just ok, mainly some treadmills and an elliptictical. No weight machines and small space. Given the resort fee I expected more.

Overall this could be a fun funky place if they get their act together, but there is a way to go.

I'm considering staying at the Riviera Palm Springs next month and I already find a few things irritating and I haven't even made my reservation yet.

Firstly, this:
Base room rate excludes
RESORT FEE of USD 35.00 Per Room / Per Night:

A resort fee of 35 USD plus tax per room per night includes the following benefits:

Wireless High Speed Internet Access (Plat benefit)
Local phone calls (seriously?? / don't want / won't use)
Newspaper (don't want / won't use)
One yoga class (don't want / won't use)
Fitness center access (Plat benefit)
Bicycle rental (don't want / won't use)
Self-parking (it's already free to the public)
I called the property and was sternly informed that they don't waive the resort fee for Plats, but valet parking is comped (regular price is $25). In other words, they expect me to pay for a list of things that I either don't want or that I'm entitled to get for free and and it's supposed to be okay because they're giving me a service of lower value for free, even though I might not want it or even use it (what if I don't have a car?). I've stayed at many other, and far nicer, properties that have waived resort fees. Sometimes I've had to ask, but I've never been refused.

I called corporate customer service and the agent I got said he agreed that it doesn't make sense. He opened a complaint for me and said I should hear back within five days. *holding my breath*

My second gripe is that they have a "stay 3 No Resort Fee" promo on. Small catch though... there is a prepaid rate available for $166 (+$35)/nt. The lowest rate that qualifies for the promo is $241/nt. I realize it's not an apples to apples comparison because the $166 is prepaid, but the net price ends up being $40 a night higher than it would be on the prepaid rate even after paying the resort fee.

Personally I think the Parker is the only great SPG property in PS. I also really prefer to use airbnb or VRBO in PS as there are so many great private rental properties.

They now have a card that explains the Plat benefits, which include as you said 'free' valet parking and 2 bottles of water. There may be one other additional perk for Plats over the regular Resort Fee items.

But I agree, compared to the Parker which charges a lower resort fee and includes valet parking for everyone, I wish The Riviera would offer a better value.

I also wish The Riviera would issue parking passes as I don't think it's fair that the day pass/pool party people take up parking spots while guests circle and circle hoping for something close to their room. Perhaps Gold/Plat dedicated parking?

Wow, the bad reviews just keep piling in for this place. Have a look at TripAdvisor, many very negative reviews. I guess that is why this place has some $97 rates!

Agreed

The resort fee doesn't get you much here. Free valet wasn't offered to me. The parking stinks, internet is no big deal. No newspaper..

Further up someone mentioned a $50 credit for food. That doesn't exist. If you are a platinum you get a continental breakfast and a room with a view of the dumpster. As I posted in another thread no room upgrades either.

Just finished two nights here.

Positives: Great location; most public areas are attractive in a retro Rat Pack sort of way.

Negatives: The owners have spared every expense in refurbishing the rooms; it is an OLD property and the general state of repair reflects years of non-investment. Everything in my room was gouged, sagging, loose, stained, or otherwise in disrepair; it reminded me of the Four Points in Orlando.

The $35 resort fee is both a money grab and an insult, as are the two $5 bottles of Fiji water in the room; nothing else is provided

Lots of potential here; just lower your expectations to the same degree that Starwood has lowered its standards.
