thank you guys for your replies!

Cabana is an interesting idea. I did once rent a cabana for my brithday at the Diplomat, it came out pricey though.

I am in fact starwood meeting planner, however, I don't like a meeting room idea - Suite would be more comfortable and relaxing and balcony is a nice addition. I've had my fair share of meeting room events and it is not something I would enjoy.

I do see that promo has expired, so I guess i will splurge 30K points, its OK with me, as long as it won't be a problem bringing my guests in and bring some catering in - like sushi, fruite platter etc.

I booked Grand Lux Ocnfrnt Jr St No-smk, Smoke-free. As a Plat, which upgrade should I be upgraded now? Is it too unrealistic to expect Deluxe Oceanfront Suite?

It was answered before thanks. Do you know the answer to my question about an upgrade?

I think you have already booked what is the standard suite at this property, so there probably will not be an upgrade beyond that. YMMV, however.

I think its unrealistic. You get a higher floor for the most part with this property, though I have my fingers crossed for you!

I booked Junior Suite, there are still at least 5 suite categories above it. Isn't Platinum supposed be upgraded to the next category up?

No. Unless the property simply wants to be more generous than they have to be. Some are; some are not.

Not to my knowledge.

If you book a standard room, you'll be upgraded (based on availability) to a select standard suite.

From the T&C
Upgrades to best available room at check-in, including Standard Suites

Subject to availability at check-in for the length of the stay, provided the room was not booked through a pre-paid third-party channel. Specialty Suites such as, but not limited to, premium view, Presidential, Honeymoon, and multiple bedroom suites are excluded. This benefit does not apply to all-suite hotels. Best rooms are identified by each property and may not include upgraded Towers level accommodations unless Towers level accommodations are booked originally. The upgrade benefit is available for one room for the personal use of the Member only, regardless of the number of additional rooms purchased by the Member. This benefit is not offered at Aloft and Element properties.
If you outright book a suite, you most likely will not be upgraded to anything about what you physically booked. Not saying that it cannot happen, but its unlikely to happen.

May I ask what makes you think that if you book a suite, you'll be upgraded above that?

Well, I have been a Plat for a few years now and am always upgraded to the next category of the one booked. Since it is my twin baby shower, I decided to splurge 32.5K points and book a Junior Suite, in hopes that I will get upgraded to at least a 2-3oom Suite, so I can have a living room large enough to fit 10-12 people. It also seems to be the case with this post:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/19568740-post47.html

Now it seems like there was no point for me to spend so many points on a room that costs 15k points just a few months ago....

I dont mean to contradict either Wiliam or Kennected, all 3 of you are correct.

you are correct in that we are suppose to be UPed to the best available room when checking in, that can be more then 1 cat above what we booked.BUT its limited and ends with Standard Suites. So book a standard suite and bingo no matter what is available they need not UP you to any of them, thats where William and Kennected are correct

So by booking a standard suite you should get 1 w/o rolling the dice had you booked a room under that if youd end up with that standard suite. But since you booked the top level of a free UP it ends there as well Officially

The 1 cat up is a Marriott thingy but by them even Standard suites are excluded from that pool

So Grand Lux Junior Suite, which is 695 sq ft one room - is a standard suite? this is what confuses me. I thought that Jr Suites are not standard suites.

No. This would be a specialty suite.

I thought that Jr Suites are not standard suites.
They are at this property...and many others.
