I don't think you have to give ultimatums, make demands - you signed up to pay an annual fee after the first year, and they don't have to give you any concessions. I think it was nice that they did for so many of us.

I just (truthfully) said "I've got 3 Amex cards, 2 that have annual fees, and I'm wondering if you can help me decide what to do, I'm not sure I want to have 2 cards with fees" and voila I was offered 3,000 points. I was hoping for more but based on the experiences here I knew that was a good deal. She even asked me, being an Amex person and not an SPG, what can you get for 3,000 points, and I told her a lower level hotel stay or a C&P stay at a better place, or add those points to your cumulative total for an even nicer hotel.

Even a lower level hotel is going to cost more than the annual fee, so I was happy.
it wasn't an ultimatum. i was just playing words, continuing the previous post.

but your post got me thinking on how to approach this, as i've never asked this.

Try "I'm thinking of/considering canceling my card" -- opens the door without risking immediate account closure.

Personally I prefer a more positive tack and just ask if they have any incentives available to encourage me to keep using the card. My sense is that either they do or don't and what shows on their screen is what the deal will be. So I just say - this is a pretty valuable card to AmEx as it had spend above $x on it last year and so I wondered if there was any incentive available. If I say I am planning to cancel a card then I really am planning to do that absent significant reason not to give by the issuer. I think folks should either see the SPG points earning as worth the annual fee or not and base their choice on that. The extra 3K or even 7K points isn't really that much for a heavy card user and if you aren't one you probably aren't worth that much to AmEx anyway.

To me the question is really whether the SPG points are worth that much more than the 2% cash back or AMEX membership rewards or other sorts of rewards I could get with a no-fee card. Added into the equation are rewards cards that are free the first year and can then be exchanged for other similar cards. On that basis, SPG doesn't seem worth it to me.

I guess it always depends on the agent you get. Those comments can be hit or miss for a retention offer, leading to a HUCA situation. Many times, I've used that tactic and was told there were no offers available. Then said "I'd like to cancel." Suddenly an offer appears. Happened 3x across various cards/banks.

One time I was on hold while being transferred to a specialist (for the retention offer, presumably). When they came back on the line, they said the specialists were all tied up but the agent had closed the account per my request.

If you want to play this game of chicken, be prepared to crash sometimes.

That's correct, but also remember that (relative to non-Amex 2% cash back cards), you get the Amex Offers and Small Business Saturday promotions which can more than make up for the $65/year AF. For example, I got $150 off a $150 AT&T Wireless purchase this year and a bunch of other smaller deals.

And, when comparing SPG cards (vs other Amex cards), they're valuable to me for the elite credit that helps me get Platinum each year.

Called this evening, received the following

1,000 points (from the specialist desk) + 3,000 points (from customer services) + 500 after $1,000 spend in 30 days is the offer I received. I took it!

*EDIT: per NJUPINTHEAIR's suggestion - It's a personal card, I put less than 23K on it last year. Had it for 2 years. Last year they have me 3K points only.

got that too for my personal SPG. i think its better than points unless they give me 4k points or more.

To the above 2 posters and others, don't you know that your offers are meaningless to others unless you post what type of card you have and your approximate annual spend on it?

After all, what might sound like a great offer when you only put $1,000 on it could be relatively little if you put let's say $100,000 annually. @:-)

I was offered 1k points + 500 points after $1k spend in 60 days. Not the best deal, but I took it.

Biz card: 6 digit spend (non-MS)

I called and straightforward asked if they could refund the annual fee or issue points to offset the fee since I use the card pretty heavily and got an answer of "unfortunately I'm not able to do that, I just don't have the ability" so I asked to speak to somebody who did. She put me on hold for 2 min came back and offered 3k points, which I accepted.

This is my second attempt at receiving a bonus for retaining my card. For my first anniversary, in 2013, I received 2k bonus. Upon my second anniversary, I was told no bonus was available because you need to wait 13 months between bonuses. I called again after the 13 months was up, and I was offered the 1,000 instant + 500 additional after 1k spend. It's been about 3 months since I paid my annual fee so I had nothing to lose, I took the offer.

He noted that but said no offers. I don't like the $65 fee but it's worth it in SPG benefits from the card so I'll likely ride it out for one more year until I decide on a new AMEX product.
And despite them telling me no, a credit just appeared on my account. Befuddled, but I'll take it if it sticks.

*EDIT: per NJUPINTHEAIR's suggestion - It's a personal card, I put less than 23K on it last year. Had it for 2 years. Last year they have me 3K points only.
Thanks, Cuddly, that is really helpful as I am around $20,000 spend but I fear I am going to get only the 1,000 points and $500 deal because of the lower spend.

Got 1000 bonus starpoints + 500 for spending $1000 in 60 days. To top it off he refunded me the foreign transaction fees for the previous month which kinda left me stunned tbh.
