THIS IS A NEW THREAD FOR 2018. The previous thread is here.
***If you buy gift cards outside promotions, you will earn ZERO points.***

Accepted tender: Cash, credit, and debit. Also available are mobile/contactless payment (Apple Pay, etc.) and mobile loyalty (card barcode via app).

Summary
Stop & Shop (S&S), Giant Food Stores (Giant PA), and Giant Food (Giant MD) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for a discount on the price paid per gallon on fuel sales at Shell and S&S/Giant fuel stations. $100* spend = 100 pts = 10c/gal discount. The particular rules vary between the three brands, and within Giant PA, the rules vary by location. Refer to the bottom of this wiki post for more information or links to official info from each brand.

You can earn gas points from both regular grocery shopping and gift card purchases (promotion only).

The grocery reward points (Go Rewards or Flexible Reward) can be transferred to either gas points (Fuel Rewards) or grocery points. The conversion rate is 100 points = $0.10/gallon or 100 points = $1 saving in grocery.

- - - - - - - - - -

Additional Information

• A loyalty card is required to take advantage of gas rewards. They look like the above image and can be obtained either online (links at end of wiki) or in-person (at the customer service counter).

• The cards currently on promotion are listed in the current weekly circular and usually change every week. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank on the back.

• S&S and Giant (DC, DE, MD, and VA) allow you to redeem up to 1500 points ($1.50/gal) per fuel purchase, and points expire 30 days after the qualifying purchase. With Giant PA, there is no limit to the number of points redeemed at one time.

• Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program.

• Your ID may be required when buying gift cards. Your name and other info may also be recorded for purchases over a discretionary dollar value. Whether you're buying a $100 card or a $5k stack, your experience will vary.

• You can view your account online using the link at the bottom of the wiki.

• It's best to purchase gift cards at the customer service counter, but reports state that a single $500 gift card can be paid for at any register without an issue. Purchases over $1k will require manager authorisation with a physical key, which may slow down the queue. You can go to the Solution Center to save time and make things easier for everyone.

• Giant Eagle and Giant Food are different chains with different ownership, and this thread is not relevant to the former.

• If you have more points in your account than are redeemed for a fuel purchase, then the remaining points will stay in your account until their respective expiration date(s). For example, if you have 2500 points and debit the 1500 ($1.50/gal) maximum, you will have 1000 points left. Similar behavior if gas is ever below $1.50/gal before discount.

• If you don't receive eligible points with your purchase due to system or human error, you can have them retroactively added by customer service (in-store or by phone). Have your receipt and a copy of the advert. It can take up to 24 hours for keyed points to appear in your account.

Grocery stores use the gas points as a way to generate loyalty to shop there based on a product with in-elastic demand (gas) that the majority of the population has no choice but to use. It has never been an incentive to "buy more gas". Years of market data show that consumers are almost color blind to where they fuel up, the only two factors are price and convenience (think Sheetz).

Grocery stores also do no "give away" anything. Some very smart people craft strategies that strive to meet their overall goals. It does not mean they won't readjust their strategy based on the current situation, but if anything I would double down on gas points as the price of gas goes up in order to keep people loyal to my brand. It costs the store the same amount today to provide 1 gas point as it ever did, but with the cost of gas going higher the consumer will value that discount even more now.

The price of gas has gone up because it is sold on the world market. American companies will export more overseas since they make a lot more money there (gas $4/gallon USA vs $7.5/gallon Europe). The loss of 8% of our oil imports from Russia is a minor thing if they decide to ban it, no gas stations will go empty from this. We have more than enough capacity to pick up the slack with ease, but it is in every companies incentive to maximize profits so they will sell a good portion of the gas made in the USA overseas instead.
The price difference of gas in the U.S. vs Europe is about tax rates. The U.S. federal gas tax is 18.3 cents per gallon (plus another 14.66 to 66.98 cents for the state tax). The EU requires a minimum gas tax of €0.36 per liter (US $1.55 per gallon). Of course this varies by country with the Netherlands gas tax set at € 0.81 per liter or $3.51 per gallon. The UK is around $2.81 per gallon.

Taxes account for some of the differences in the spread, but taxes haven't changed, with Europe always paying more, so that is irrelevant to the current situation. The recent increase in prices in Europe however is much higher proportionally than in the USA. This is what would incentivize the sale of oil there vs here. Granted we only posses a limited capacity to increase exports without long term investments, but that won't mean that our prices won't still rise.

Sad indeed. Going from zero dollars a gallon to $5 a gallon feels pretty rough. I guess we can wait one more week to be sure, but it looks like Giant/S&S has ended the gas party. The timing could not be worse.

What other stores, specifically in PA are/were generous with gas points (like max discount for Giant for up to 25 gal.) I know Weis only gives $1 off per gal. IIRC.

It's a different region of PA, and I have no idea if they ever offer points on V/MC, but with Giant Eagle's program you can redeem for the full price of gas with a 30 gallon limit.

Personally I think it's too early for all the doom and gloom. There has been a V/MC promo the 3rd Friday of March before.

while you are praying you need to add another pray that they get the $20-500s in stock, many stores are out of them both Vs and MCs. The promo w/o the cards is worthless

The ad scan everyone has been waiting for...
Giant MD 3/18-3/24/22: 10x on Adidas.
For historical reference, since 2015, the starting date for the 2-3x March Visa promo has been 3/20, 3/4, 3/3, 3/16, 3/15, 3/13, 3/12.

With no late November/early December Visa/Mastercard fuel point promo, nor anything in December (a one-off for 2016 & 2020), it is quite possible that fuel points on V/MC are gone for good.

In fact, Giant Eagle has now suspended the expiration of points for the remainder of the year.

One can now accumulate enough points to get a free fill-up at this chain of stores.

Of course the downside is that Bass Pro and Cabelas don't accept any returns for cash/credit. I have been able to return unworn shoes to change sizes, but forget about getting something else or store credit.

That's not the downside I was thinking of.

Yea I believe the Fat Lady has sung her song

Not sure what did it in but wouldnt surprise me that as much as they tried to limit the amount a person can earn, some folks found ways around it. The good thing is if you still go to Shell in some areas it will be alot quicker to fill up. The folks standing around and hawking the fill ups for $XX wont be there , and some even put out announcements what time theyd be there and lines formed

Of cause all that had to be done is limit how many times a fill up can be done in a 24 hr period. Doubt anyone would go once a day to do just 1 fill-up, it was being able to do countless fill-ups that made it worthwhile for them
