Just be aware that the value of the grocery rewards can be a bad deal compared to using those rewards for gas.

Definitely do the math on the value of the groceries (based on prices you can get in the market at large, not necessarily just Safeway's very high everyday prices) and how much you can save on gas based on how many gallons your tank holds... I find the value of some of the grocery rewards is favorable for me but it just depends on your situation.

I do like the option of the grocery reward because it gives another option. Gas prices vary widely within a 50 mile radius of me currently ranging from a low of 2.99 in Carson City, NV to a high of 4.29 at Lake Tahoe and the Safeway stations are stuck at 3.27-3.39-3.65 which is competitive for their neighborhoods but not necessarily the best I can do.

A few scenarios where --> groceries makes sense:
Don't have a car
Have an electric vehicle
Spend far more than you can use toward gas per month
Want to extend the rewards an extra month (vacation, business travel, etc.)

Of course. That's the whole reason why grocery rewards were implemented. In highly urban areas, the rewards might not appeal to a large enough customer base due to the prevalence of public transportation, and the decreased need to own a vehicle. They wanted more people to participate because most of the coupons are manufacturer's coupons and they get reimbursed for them, which means more sales.

Just an FYI for those interested, there is currently a nationwide sale on Talenti (gelato/sorbetto) products at all Albertsons-Safeway family of stores. Currently either $2.99 or 2/$6 at most stores. (Reports of 2/$7 in LA area, 3/$10 in Nevada) There are two J4U coupons; one for $4 off two, and one for $1.75 off one. Depending on which flavors you get, there is a bug that allows the two coupons to stack.

So, if you get two and the coupons stack (and assuming that your local Albertsons-Safeway store has them for $3), you're paying ~25 cents for two. If the coupons don't stack, you'll be paying ~$1 each for the first two, and ~$1.25 for the third one. These are normally $5.99 each

OR you don't have a Safeway gas station in your state. Mom's been using my gas rewards this whole time, but now I get free meat. Sorry, mom!

In the northeast, the gas station partner is Sunoco. I'm assuming the legacy Albertsons banners all have their partners for redemption.

The other issue with Gas Rewards is that you have to amass quite a few to get a competitive deal.

Example:
Local Costco is selling 87 unleaded for $3.15/gal and I can use my Costco Visa which rewards 4% on that = Net price of $3.025/gal. But no other rewards or points.

Local Safeway sells 87 unleaded for $3.53/gal, cash is $3.43 (which you can access this price by loading a Safeway gas gift card in-store with a CC that gets grocery bonus - I use AMEX HH card).

I need at least 4 rewards to break even on the transaction. If I go to max out the rewards with $1/gal off (10 fuel rewards) - I will be at a net price of $2.43/gal = $0.60 gallon savings. My car usually takes 12 gallons to fill up when I am on a quarter tank, doesn't come close to the 20 gallon max. So I can net $7.20 in savings, and earn 6x HHonors points on the transaction.

I usually squeak out 1 fuel fill-up a month @ Safeway, based on my grocery and merchant gift card (2x points, Amazon included ) spend rate. But that leaves 7-9 other fill-ups that month to Costco.

It's not exactly the best deal out there, but it still is worthwhile for my setup to shift some grocery and gift card spend to my local Safeway. Plus I could throw a baseball and hit their corporate office from my office, so I am helping out a local business ^ lol

Plus there are other ways to get cheap gas without jumping through all these hoops

Agreed, the gas rewards are only valuable to me, when I've got enough for $0.60-$1.00 off.
Then I'll take my van when it's near empty, and bring along a 5-gallon can to fill also.
Stations limit to 25 gallons, or I'd bring multiple containers. Unlike you, I use my
Walmart MoneyCard as a debit card, to get the debit price break and also to
generate some legit spend on my MC to mix things up.

Late last year Safeway was frequently having up to 10x gas rewards
on cards I was buying. I hate the expiration policy, I wasn't able to
take full advantage of all the ones I accrued.

Well, first you buy yourself an oil refinery with your balance of American Express MR points.... And then you also buy the crude oil with your Barclays Card (no forex fees)...

Found a bug in the new system: in August, you could have redeemed multiple rewards of the same exact type (e.g. 3x $10 off), but you were only allowed 1 per calendar month at check out. It seems in September they have fixed it: you are only able to redeem a single reward of the same exact type (e.g. 1x $10 off) per calendar month. However, you can still stack different levels and types of grocery awards in a single check-out. It makes the program slightly less lucrative for big spenders who don't drive much like me.

Bought 12 x 500 VGC at the liquor register at my Safeway, but 7 didn't activate. Had to come back next day to get a refund with a manager present. Went to get more today, but I'm not allowed to buy at the liquor store register anymore, I now have to go to the customer service counter and can buy only $2K.

Goddamn corporate came down on the manager. I've been going to this store for years and always go to the liquor store 15 minutes before closing, no-one is ever there, no wait, no hassle, I can buy as much as I want, although I've only ever gone up to 8K.

Gift cards must be the only kind of product in a store that the store doesn't want to sell you as much as you want as a regular known customer.

Anyone ever appealed this kind of a per day limit at a grocery store with corporate somehow?
