BBC have this:

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with 239 people on board.

The airline said in a statement that flight MH370 disappeared at 02:40 local time on Saturday (18:40 GMT on Friday).

TGflyergirl Mar 7, 2014 5:47 pm

Looks like the aircraft involved is 9M-MRO

HawkeyeFlyer Mar 7, 2014 5:48 pm

Prayers to everyone on board and their families. Hoping for a positive outcome

Would be the 3rd or 4th hull loss for a 777.

rylan Mar 7, 2014 6:00 pm

This doesn't sound good :(

Arabmoney Mar 7, 2014 6:00 pm

Pray that everyone is found safe and well.

can someone aware me on what lose contact actually means? is it that it could have been hijacked? or that its probably sent a distress and gone down but the media want to be sensitive about reporting it? or could it just be a problem with their communication equipment?

SunLover Mar 7, 2014 6:00 pm

Being widely reported now by the U.S. media.

From Malaysian Facebook page:
[#MASalert] MH370 Incident Media Statement Released At 7.24am/8 Mar 2014 MY Local Time

Sepang, 8 March 2014: Malaysia Airlines confirms that flight MH370 has lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2.40am, today (8 March 2014).

Flight MH370, operated on the B777-200 aircraft, departed Kuala Lumpur at 12.41am on 8 March 2014. MH370 was expected to land in Beijing at 6.30am the same day. The flight was carrying a total number of 227 passengers (including 2 infants), 12 crew members.

Malaysia Airlines is currently working with the authorities who have activated their Search and Rescue team to locate the aircraft.

The airline will provide regular updates on the situation. Meanwhile, the public may contact +603 7884 1234 for further info.

Orion Mar 7, 2014 6:05 pm

I would like to know where it was when it went missing.

Himeno Mar 7, 2014 6:10 pm

This is odd... Flightradar24 says it's landed, expert flyer lists it as en route and extra details are "0AHOST ACCESS RESTRICTED THIS TERMINAL"

Mart81 Mar 7, 2014 6:12 pm

In this particular case, I strongly dislike Flightstats.com's standard message "It is currently later at the arrival airport than the scheduled arrival time and the flight has not yet landed."

Fingers crossed although fearing the worst :(

You're probably looking at yesterday's. Date would be 08/03

Data ends not too long after takeoff.

Looks bad.

It's still missing and no news on it. Various countries are looking for it.

That was the first thing I checked.

While it doesn't look good, here's hoping for a better than expected outcome.

Praying for all on board.

Zomba Mar 7, 2014 6:21 pm

Prayers for those on board. Certainly doesn't sound good.

tboons Mar 7, 2014 6:21 pm

It lost contact about 90 mins after take off. Should have reach the gulf of Thailand if it is not hijacked. Could be hard to track if any accident indeed happened over gulf of Thailand.

If communication system breaks down, and the plane is flying, then they could be running low on fuel as it's almost 9 hours past take off for a 6 hours trip?

bugsy Mar 7, 2014 6:23 pm

Here is the official release on their website, same as on their facebook page

Even if comm systems and transponder went down, someone would still have spotted it on radar.
Given the length of the flightaware track and the comment that Subang ATC lost contact, it is likely in/around the Gulf of Thailand.

Prayers for everybody on board!!

Anyone knows the registration no of the aircraft?

I'm guessing part of the reason would be not wanting to panic family & friends if it was simply a transponder/communications issue.

After it became clear that the flight wasn't going to simply land as scheduled, they would then want some time to get those concerned somewhere secluded and have time to talk to them before the press caught wind and moved in.

Either way, I imagine that search efforts were underway shortly after contact was lost with the plane.

Here's hoping for a good outcome.

heffa Mar 7, 2014 6:29 pm

What ever unfortunately event that happened, it must have happen very quickly since all communication, transponder and tracking stopped at once. Explosion?

My thoughts goes to family and friends of the people on board.

Airlinereporter is reporting it to be 9M-MRO, 777-200ER delivered in May 2002.

tuolumne Mar 7, 2014 6:30 pm

Prayers to everyone onboard. I saw the CNN and BBC alerts flash across my iPhone and my heart sank. Same feeling as when I saw the Asiana 777 SFO incident splash across the news wires.

First off, certainly my thoughts and prayers are with those on board and their families.

I'm surprised this wasn't reported on sooner, and more information availiable since the aircraft lost contact with ATC not long after take off.

Globalist Mar 7, 2014 6:33 pm

Planes dont just disappear for 7 hours, the writing is on the wall and I got a bad feeling here. My thoughts are with the passengers, crew and their loved ones.

Looks like this same plane was involved in a minor incident in 2012 at PVG when the tip of the wing clipped an China Eastern a346

Thoughts and prayers that it and everyone on board is found safetly

Looks bad.

Im sure it cant be good :td::(. As for the data though if you look at previous days it would appear that flight goes into a black hole of data for most of the flight other than ascent, a few blips at cruise, and then some data on descent sometimes
