What's your point?

MO/FS/SPG are part of Virtuoso...and also have their own PP programs...his post may be old but the info is as relevant as it ever was.

You agreed with his assertion that the only regret about Langham Chicago is that it wasn't a member of Virtuoso/FHR. It is, as of 1 July 2015

I stayed with my partner at the Langham recently for a long weekend, so thought I'd add to this thin thread.

In short: I wish every hotel was like the Langham. It had gorgeous, warm but modern interiors and fantastic staff. There were electrical outlets in useful places, and plenty of them. There was a functional desk, and comfortable chairs. All things that should go without saying in a luxury property, but don't always happen. Housekeeping did two full services every day. The curtains actually blocked light (the Trump across the street, for example, couldn't manage it when I stayed last year. I shouldn't put the Trump in the same category as the Langham, because it's leagues below in service and facilities.)

I was particularly impressed with the bathtub: I love a good soak, and I could completely sink into this tub (we were upgraded to one of the suites; it was larger than my apartment in New York). They didn't skimp on the toiletries, which were their in-house Chuan Spa brand. Yes, I'm easily swayed by nice smelling toiletries especially when they give me an exfoliating bath gel.

The spa area was lovely. I didn't have any treatments, but each locker room had a series of a sauna, an aromatherapy steam room, and another steam room, plus some kind of aromatherapy shower. The saunas and steam rooms were nicely sized-- not tiny closets that I've encountered in some other properties. It was impeccably clean, and it was very quiet. On one visit I saw one other guest, but no one else was using the steam rooms when I was there. The pool and hot tub had a little more traffic, but in all, the property never felt overrun or teeming with people.

Club access is worth it. The breakfast selection is very good, and importantly to me, has long hours (I think it was until 11 on weekends and 10:30 on weekdays. I'm not an early riser when I travel for leisure, so I very much appreciated that.) The afternoon cocktail hour was also a nice way to have small bites and some gin & tonics before dinner. There was usually a generous spread of shrimp, several hot appetizers, cheeses, and some sweets.

I'll definitely stay here again the next time I'm in Chicago, and actually I might find an excuse to visit Chicago if it means I could have a couple of nights here.

The Virgin Hotel is a bit more downmarket, if I'm not mistaken. I used to live across the street. Decent place to live, not a great place for a visitor.

I'll have to try this property next time I'm in Chi - I wonder if it will join LHW as other Langhams have done? They've had an absence there since the Elysian became a Waldorf.

Thanks for sharing. I'll be staying there for 4 days this weekend and hope to have the same experience as you.

Stayed for 4 nights in July - Mixed Feelings

Visited Chicago for 4 nights in July for a girl's trip with my friend. We stayed in a Langham Club Room (2 queens) on a pay 3/stay 4 internet rate deal. The rates were better than virtuoso rates for our dates, and since we were on a club floor - already included breakfast, afternoon tea, cocktails etc.... Based on everything I had read, I was expecting to fall head over heels in love with the Langham - so my expectations were high. The hotel as everyone has previously said is really gorgeous, but I felt that service was not up par. Since we were staying on the club floor, we were escorted up to the club room and checked in from there. They referred to it as butler service - but in my view was just a second check-in/concierge desk.
The club room is also really pretty - sleek white marble floors, clean modern furniture in tones of off white & beige. Towering windows overlooking the incredible Chicago skyline. There are 3 areas in the club - the living room type area with couches and seating arrangements, dining area - with tables for 2 and 4 people and the food service area - where they lay out the buffet items and a bar/coffee station. This has the potential to be a great asset, but in my experience it was the weakest part of the offering. We used the club room over our four day stay for breakfast and cocktails daily and afternoon tea once. On every visit, they were understaffed. The buffet items (food, coffee, tea, wine etc...) were never restocked. I had to track down one of the two staff members at each service in order to have a cup of tea, glass of wine, bite to eat etc..... Also the tables are not bused and reset so it was difficult to find a place to sit that was cleared. Then you had to find a napkin, silverware etc.... Also the same staff that were clearing tables etc... were the also on staff at the desk - so there was always a line there. The staff that were working were always polite and friendly but there just are not enough of them for the volume of people in the club. For a 5 star hotel - if they are going to offer this service - they need to figure out how to get this right.

The hotel rooms are lovely in design - very relaxing muted colors - spa like feel. Very comfortable beds and quiet rooms. I don't care for the design of the bathroom which has a frosted glass window between the main room and bathroom. If someone gets up to use bathroom in the middle of the night it floods the entire room with light. Also the door to the bathroom is a sliding glass door/ barn door style - which doesn't actually create the level of privacy some people prefer.

One night we had dinner at the bar area of the hotel's restaurant on the second floor. Once again the space is stunningly beautiful - with great views. Service was also quite good from a friendly bartender. The food however was mediocre at best with the yellowtail sashimi being inedible - very fishy. We also had a flatbread pizza which was fine. Unfortunately the food really lets down this beautiful space.

Finally the other area we had issues with was the concierge/butler service. On Wednesday when we checked in the concierge asked if we needed help with reservations for Friday night where we had not planned in advance. We asked for a great steak place - he mentioned a handful of options - specifically steered us away from Gibson's. By Friday afternoon we had not heard back from him, so we tracked him down in the club and he said he could not find space at any of the preferred places but would send us to a nearby location (Benny's Chophouse) which he said was still great. Unfortunately the meal was really terrible - particularly the bone-in rib eye. The following day we mentioned to the club concierge on duty how disappointed we were and he looked shocked - his response was " I can't believe he would send you there - we never send client's there." All in all left us with a bit of a bad feeling. I know the concierge can't be held responsible for the quality of our meal at the restaurant - but to then have one throw the under under the bus.

The spa, gym and indoor pool area area also beautiful and a highlight of our stay.

Anyway I am hoping that we just had bad luck on our stay - maybe they were understaffed that week for some reason and it was an anomaly. The hotel was so exceptionally lovely looking and physically comfortable that I will try it again.

I stayed at the Langham again recently, and it was another very lovely stay. We unfortunately didn't get upgraded to a suite like last time, but it was nevertheless still quite pleasant. We had a very nice river view-- which was better than from the suite last year, where we looked out directly onto a high-rise car park. It was certainly quite a bit less space than last year-- each of the individual rooms of the suite were quite a bit larger than the entire standard room, but it was fine for two adults for a few days. Drawer space is a little limited, so I'm glad we had both packed light.

The bathtub in the suite is (obviously) much better, but even in the standard room I was able to have a relaxing, deep soak. (No exfoliating bath gel or the like, though.)

Once again, we paid for club access, and I'd definitely do so again. The staff was usually very good at clearing away tables and replenishing food, but one morning at breakfast was a bit more difficult (a wait for clean glasses, no napkins, etc.) But that's a small complaint. The selection of food at breakfast and then at the cocktail hour was very good, and rotated over the course of our stay. And we've never been able to take advantage of the pink cab.

Once again, I was very pleased with the spa area. I was able to cycle through the two steam rooms and the sauna without seeing anyone else aside from staff. The aromatherapy shower was briefly out of order, but since I don't exactly get the point of that, I wasn't too disappointed.

There's no rowing machine in the fitness center. (But very few hotel fitness centers have them.)

But none of those quibbles really detracts from what was another excellent experience, and the Langham will be our first choice next time we're in Chicago.

Just a quick few newbie questions on this thread if someone has the time to help.
Some great reviews which have made me almost sure this hotel will be our choice for a long weekend in March 2017.
Is it worth booking a room inclusive of club access or to pay as an additional benefit? With the £ being very weak against the $ for us in the UK it's a consideration.
Also, I see the lounge has a cocktail hour, but do they serve complimentary alcoholic drinks throughout the day, or just at prescribed times?
Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

Yes to Club access! Club access gets you a (very good) breakfast, afternoon tea (mostly cakes and small sweets), and then the cocktail hour, which has savory snacks, canapes, and a good range of wines and spirits. I only saw alcohol during the cocktail hour; I didn't try asking for wine outside of that time, so I'm not sure how they would respond.

I think the premium for club access is worth it, particularly for a couple or family and if you'll be around the hotel enough to have breakfast and either tea or cocktails. The club is also a pleasant place to wait for flight after check-out.

Club access should also get you a room on a higher floor, although the views in general are pretty limited. I've had a mix of being able to see the river and then one time being across from parking garage. But I'm not going to Chicago for views.

Excellent, thanks for all your advice. Looks like we can time things well for club access to make the most of it. Will be our first time in chicago so want to make it special.

Any new insight on the Langham? It won #1 ranking for US hotels this year. I have a stay coming up next week.

I just wanted to post quickly here and share my experience from this past weekend since it was so lovely. We booked through Virtuoso for the breakfast and hotel credit, and that also came with a bottle of wine and truffles. The breakfast credit was $100/day which covered two of their "Wabash" breakfasts delivered through room service (including service charge and automatic gratuity.) The $100 hotel credit won't cover much of anything at the spa (think $250 massages and similarly priced facials), but will cover modest dinner downstairs at Travelle.

We were given a room on the eighth floor facing the Trump tower though we did have a fairly expansive river view. The hotel is in a Mies building with beautiful floor to ceiling windows so a room with a view is much appreciated. The room itself is absolutely gorgeous with very light tans accented with darker wood and purple. The bathroom was huge, complete with rainfall showerhead and a nice enough soaking tub. The only real issue with the room was the TV, which while large and well-kept, had significant burn in. Usually we wouldn't care about the TV but this was a staycation for us and we spent quite a bit of time lounging around the room watching the Harry Potter marathon.

The dining was generally great, though the room service was somewhat inconsistent with minor things like the pastry basket. Each "Wabash" breakfast was supposed to come with a gourmet pastry basket, but on day one we were sent one small basket, on day two we were sent one huge basket, and on day three we were sent two small baskets. Once again, incredibly minor especially considering we weren't planning on eating three pastries each alongside our already huge breakfasts. Up the thread someone else didn't enjoy the food at Travelle, but I have always had a great meal there. I called down at about 5:00 asking about a table for 7:00pm that evening and requesting to be by the window and they were happy to accommodate the request. Please don't miss the 'nduja with honey because it was amazing (and somehow only $6?!?)

Service was all around wonderful. Staff went out of their way to stop and greet you, housekeeping was incredibly thorough, and the room service delivery staff was exceptional every morning. Upon checkout we were asked whether we had any issues with the stay and I initially said that no it was great. The front desk agent insisted that they would love any feedback and I mentioned the TV burn in and the lack of house car (apparently it was being serviced all weekend). He made note and insisted that he take care of the approximately ~$40 worth of charges we had gone above our hotel credit.

This is certainly the best hotel I've ever visited and Chicago is lucky to have it.
ABG and Travlur like this.

As far as FHR or Virtuoso upgrades go at the Langham-- does anyone know how the club level fits into the category progression (or perhaps not at all?)?

I don't think the upgrades will work from non club level to a club level.

Side note, I stayed there 1.5 weeks ago and loved it. In the middle of writing a review currently.
