$20/$50/$100 Trick outside of vegas?

Hello All,

After having my $50 trick work in vegas, is it acceptable to offer a similar tip to front desk agents in other locations? Would this be perceived as rude at all? Any experiences would be appreciated.

Upcoming Hotels Stays:
Dubai
Miami
Montreal

Thanks!

It works just like tipping room service, just put your money on the table, sometimes you might get it beck, and sometime you might get noting..

Most of the time they will not keep it, and hand it back to you.

Just too lazy to do this trick...and since I normally book into the room category I want these days, the whole idea is pointless.

Hotel relationships are important to me, and I'm not about to turn a check-in into something that feels like a drug deal.

I would feel ashamed to do so. Also I would feel ashamed if I´m the staff and get such an offer. It´s perhaps some Kind of acceptable at a Las Vegas Casino hotel basis level, but I think by trying it at a luxury hotel it only Shows the Person who tries it is in the wrong hotel and don`t belong there.

To echo offerendum: luxury hotels are not the place to try this.

Of course it's trashy, that's why it's such a perfect fit with Las Vegas! But the question the OP asked was whether it would work or not, not whether any of us try it (I don't btw). I am inclined to think it depends more on the local culture than whether it is a luxury hotel or not. For example, in mainland China, maybe.

A member has indirectly pointed out that this thread, which we have all been assuming is about luxury hotels because of the forum in which it was posted, does not specifically mention luxury hotels.

I invite the OP to comment further about their intention in the next day or two. Absent that, I'll move the thread.

Good point.

I do believe the responses on this thread scared the OP away!

The real trick is getting the upgrade without the grease.

Yes this would be at luxury hotels. On my next trip I've been able to get upgraded to a Jr. Suite due to hotel status but know that there are larger suites still available. So far I've only done the trick in Vegas, Atlantic City, and Manhattan which have worked previously.

I would try make it as courteous as possible along the lines of "If you could please check on any availabilities for complimentary upgrades I would surely appreciate it and like to tip you for your efforts"
