planning italy incl aman venice

aman venice opened yesterday? ill be one of the people doing aman venice this summer, will definitely do report

so far thinking i probably wont combine with anything else (like feltrinelli)

but a couple questions as part of decision making >

- in europe, any good properties at risk of closing or changing management?

- anyone been to any small / really small properties in italy? (few rooms)
- or similar in german speaking countries/areas, that are not 'really far' from airports?
- for example aenea in austria - anyone heard anything first hand?

aman questions >

- id be interested in any experiences with or thoughts re ordering food not on the menu incl prices
(like prices compared to menu, and perhaps room service as well)

- dumb/simple question, but does aman have a standard name for "excursion pricelist" ?

- anyone heard how much venice is selling out?

- perhaps thoughts on aman venice location, incl gourmet and cheap restaurants

now the satellite image is from during hotel conversion

anyone planning/considering aman venice please feel free to use this thread
obviously things like food at aman can apply to other aman as well

My advice after a transatlantic in Y is to book somewhere cheaper than an Aman for at least a night to recover from the flight. We always find that it takes at least a day coming this way even when flying J or F never mind Y.

The hotel is in a wonderful location. If I recall, during the last Biennale, we visited an exhibition on the site of this palazzo. Gorgeous!

Venice is tricky for food - in most cases you are best off improvising, and looking for cheap and chearful chichetti bars - so long as you hear more Italian than English you should be fine. The two higher end places that are reliably very good (if expensive) are Da Fiore (one of the few Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy that I found to live up to the hype), and Alle Testiere. You will want to make reservations for both well in advance. I'm not sure the exact proximity to the Aman, but Venice is pretty walkable and nothing is that far from anything else in my experience.

Yes That is definitely the palazzo.. It is also possible to enter from the land side, not just water landing.

Are you looking for a place to stay in addition to the Aman in Venice? If so, consider the Villa Cipriani in the charming hill town of Asolo. It's roughly an hour west of Venice. I stayed when it was under Starwood management and enjoyed the hotel, it's delightful garden, and the charming small town very much. Friends were there two months ago under current management and considered it a high point of their trip.

wonder what renovations have been done and what are ongoing with what timeline, including pool

i might stay at additional hotels, thought id see what kind of replies i got for that set of questions

You mentioned it already, but Villa Feltrinelli is superb and one of my favourite places to visit in Europe.

Seems like they are both similar, both amazing restored authentic villas,
the interiors look similar... I can't wait to check Aman Venice out!
As it seems like the FS Venice is not happening, this will be our next
destination. If it's anything like our experience in the FS Florence,
it will be great!
Can't wait for your report, please try to locate better/worse rooms,
shoot as many pictures as you can, would love to see the 360 view
from the roof terrace too
Could you also ask about the prices in 2014, are they expecting to go
much higher than the current "introductory" prices?

Personally I'd never take any kind of organised tour/excursion in Venice, even (or perhaps especially) one organised by Aman. The best thing about Venice is to get lost wandering around and find some special little corner well away from Molly and Hank from Wisconsin.

The water buses/vaparettos are the best way to travel around and from there you might consider going to Murano or Torcello where the Locanda Cirpriani is a nice spot for lunch.
