Which still offers ok value on highly priced routes. But with the gap between Biz and coach narrowing every year, these redemptions aren't worth that much either anymore. Plus you normally have a much greater choice of carrier if you are not bound by the FFP.

So overall I found that I seriously save money by no longer hoping to save on future redemptions but flying on specials whenever possible.

Using your miles for shorthaul bookings is an incredibly bad idea - better to keep your miles for longhaul, especially premium, redemptions - and this holds for most European FFPs (one notable exception being BA's Reward Flight Savers). So most savvy flyers know not to make such bookings unless
a) the flexibility is needed
b) the booking is for a one-way flight for which the cash price is ridiculous
c) the booking is short notice and the cash price is ridiculous
also - short-notice short-haul multi-sector flights can be good(ish) value if you pay the feetaxes with miles (talking Birmingham <MUC> Athens etc). That's if you are awash with miles.

BA offers the cash and points program which is excellent value in a case like this.

But especially for these, UA and other programs are superior. The 24h advance booking is only enforced to virtually "next day" as you can abuse the HNL time zone and you can change flights at a moment's notice.

One of the few uses of the crappy UA MP program.

You fell for it. M&M tickets may be flexible, but certainly not in this context. Good luck trying to rebook on short notice. With paid tickets you can almost always pay up to Super-Y or J, but with an award ticket there's a high probability that you may not get rebooked on the flight you want because no award seats are being offered.

If you need "flexibility", don't book awards, unless you are prepared to buy a one-way full fare ticket when the need for "flexibility" arises.

HTB.
