The airport could be closed a whole lot longer than that. BRU airport authorities tweet that they do not even have access to the building yet. Before operations resume, the departure hall would have to be checked extensively for structural damage.

Should there be structural damage, which would not be unusual in a blast of this magnitude, it could be months before the building is serviceable again, if at all.

Some check-in infrastructure may still be serviceable in the far end of the building, but the central security check for Terminal A and B is only accessible via the main departure hall, which is completely trashed.

Of course, this is all speculation, but it is hard to imagine significant passenger operations from BRU for the next couple of weeks at least. If they do pull it off, then hats of to them.

The forensic people werent allowing the structural assesment people in. I doubt the structures are that badly damaged, especially since the SN side of the checkin area was not affected at all and no one from SN injured in the blast.

BRU just announced that passenger operations will not resume before Tuesday, 29 March.

Engineers are now being admitted to the building to perform a damage assessment and study possibilities for recommencing passenger operations. The security perimeter around the airport remains in place.

Sorry those are just false ceiling covers, which pop out with the push of a finger.

True, but we also can't conclude on the basis of this photo alone that there is damage to the structure.

Hoping for the best.

A large number of the windows on the front of the building have been blown out. Of course those could be easily be replaced, hard to say if there's any structural damage.

It's impossible to say from what we know. All I said was that it is not unusual, in a blast of this magnitude, for buildings to sustain structural damage.

Edit: preliminary survey has been completed. Building seems stable. That's good news.

A friend of mine is currently stuck in Freetown. Ticket office in Sierra Leone not picking up. Travel agent in UK unable to reach SN in London. SN Social Media team offering the 'useful' advice: "if the flight isn't shown on the website, it means it won't be operated... please keep on checking our website for all updated flight dates."

Any advice or channels to help work out how she can get out of Sierra Leone?

The travel agent definitely has clear instructions on how to rebook and revalidate the ticket on alternative carriers.

Or just go to FNA airport and grab the local SN airport ST:

I want to travel. What do I have to do?

Brussels Airlines offers intercontinental flights via a connection through the airports of Frankfurt and Zurich (see schedules here below).

If you would like to be rebooked on these flights, please follow the next steps:

Check the schedule for your route here below
in case you are located in Africa, please contact our city or airport ticketing office in your city of departure
in case you are located in Europe or North America:
if you booked your intercontinental flight via brusselsairlines.com, please contact our Service Center at +32 2 723 23 62 or +49 800 850 60 70 (+1 866 308 2230 from the US) for a rebooking.
if you booked your intercontinental flight via a (online) travel agency, please contact your agency for a rebooking.

"in case you are located in Africa, please contact our city or airport ticketing office in your city of departure" - as I mentioned, tried and failed... I will see if she can get to the airport.

Orbitz is the TA.

Thanks for the help!
