Lufthansa 1 + 1 = 2 or maybe 3?
Just an observation.
I need to fly a round trip JFK to LEJ (Leipzig, Germany) on 3/30/2015 and return on 4/22/2015. There are no direct flights from JFK to LEJ. Flights go through FRA. I want the JFK-FRA leg to be in the business cabin and and the second leg from FRA to LEJ in coach both ways.
If I book online using the LH site or Vayama.com site one round trip JFK-LEJ costs $4,300 where the long leg is in business the short leg in coach.
If I book two separate trips, the long leg in business costs $2,973 and short leg in coach costs $164, total $3,137, over $1,000 less then the first option.
one plus one equals three!!

Interesting even though LH 401 and 405 are wide open, the LEJ feeder is only available in K&L when MSC applies with the JFK flight. If you delink the segments to get a cheaper feeder in Y the LH 400 feeder is only available in V so you have to fly the later 404 in L.
Which costs 164EUR. But it can only be done in one PNR with two tickets if you use a TA

That's because the JFK-any_big_city routes are very competitive whereas nothing flies to Leipzig. It's a super tiny airport.
I'd strongly recommend driving from FRA. One of the nicest Autobahn systems on the planet and you can give a lot of lead foot. Plus you don't depend on the spares airline schedule.

Well, if you like visiting relatively 'small' airports (still well over 2 million visitors each year) and if connection time would be sufficient to clear customs and immigration and to check your stuff in again, then why not cut the booking in two pieces? Train ain't exactly cheap in Germany, neither is car rental. And Germany from above is actually quite a nice view.
I totally agree with you about the strange pricing policy: I would expect two separate tickets to be more expensive than one containing all.
