[INDENT]KLM test flight passes off without problem
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines carried out a test flight this evening between about 19.45 and 21:00 hours CEST in Netherlands airspace using a Boeing 737-800. The flight was carried out to establish whether air quality in the atmosphere meets the requirements for safe flight. No problems were encountered during the flight.

Just saw it on BBC World News... it's just a matter of minutes probably until the rest of Europe will follow, I suppose...

Important new sidenote found since today on the Map published by the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center:
"Ash concentrations within the indicated areas are unknown"
Source: http://metoffice.com/aviation/vaac/d...1271569746.png
So there seems to be room for discussion about where there really is ash and where it really poses a threat and where not.
Of course you can always say "better safe than sorry", but on the other hand, the surface covered on that map is now sooooo big, that I cannot imagine that there is really a dangerousely high densitiy of particles in all the area covered.
The closure of airspace and airports has so far been in line with this map as far as I've seen.
BUT this does NOT seem to apply outside Europe.
Example: Moscow (DMV) seems to be running normal ops, even though it would now clearly be in the affected area.
LH and KLM (and I've also seen OS) seem to be willing to challenge this situation.

I heard on TV a scientist from Iceland say that the volcano would either continue for several days and perhaps end, or it could take small pauses and continue for over a year...
