frogs in LA

i have a couple of kids who are just crazy about frogs. it all started last fall with a traveling exhibition they saw in atlanta called "frogs - a chorus of colors."

does anyone know of any places in the greater LA area that focus on, or at least have a large variety of, frogs?

I have lived in So Cal all my life and I was a tom girl that loved frogs and I cannot think of a place where one would find frogs. I really haven't seen many in the mountains and streams.

I think they have a few at the LA Zoo www.lazoo.org it is a really good zoo and assuming your kids are young, they would have a good time. They have a good reptile exhibit and Reggie the Alligator www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,275392,00.html

Well, I can't get the site's graphs to work for me, but National Wildlife Federation's Frogwatch USA webpage looks as though it might have some useful information about looking for frogs and toads around here.

You're up against lost of habitat and a die off (caused by a fungus).

thanks, wingless and iapetus. we're actually lazoo members, but i've never liked their reptile exhibit building. that frogwatch page is neat, but i think LA is too arid to find any wild frogs.

YVR, you're absolutely right - it's one of the things i've learned about amphibians this past year. in fact, amphibian ark is having a year of the frog campaign to boost awareness.

I would watch for upcoming events at the Science Discovery Museum in Santa Ana. http://www.discoverycube.org/upcoming.aspx

They actually have some summer camps/programs that include learning about frogs.

They have some of the small brightly coloured tropical frogs at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. Not a ton but the aquarium is pretty good.

I love frogs too!

Y'know, I was thinking about this comment as I was out cycling this weekend. I ride my bike very frequently through Sycamore Canyon in Glendale, California (in the hills just west of the Rose Bowl). When I bike through there in the late evening, I often hear plenty of frogs (or maybe they're toads?). I guess how many there are depends upon how wet the ground is. But, based on that experience, I don't know how accurate it is to say that it is too arid here for wild frogs ...
