The description of the clothing sought is quite generic, so I'll just take a stab and mention that the California Market Center (California Mart), which is not normally open to the public, holds periodic samples sales on some Fridays in December:

The Market Center is at Main and 9th in Downtown LA, so any of the DT hotels would work for this location.

I'd be happy to help point - consummate shopper here and native angeleno.
However, given the choices and the size of the region, probably a little more direction would help. Is there somewhere specific you are staying/flying into/out of?

Time of your visit would also be useful (in addition to what you are looking for and where you will be). Holiday or special sales may be going on that will make a place more attractive than normal (i.e. if you are here during Nordstrom's twice yearly sale). At work we get a fair amount of foreign visitors -- some want to head straight for the boutique's in Beverly Hills while others are amazed at what they find at Marshall's and Ross. US retailing is very different from most other places in the world - let us know more and we'll point you in the right direction.

From your description
sounds like you just want to be near a big mall. But in that case, why bother coming to LA?
For some unfathomable reason, people are gaga over the Grove, so there's always the Farmers Daughter motel. Or the Park Plaza motel on the other side. But beware - that "mall" is crazy nuts during the holidays.
Others seem to think the Century City Mall has a good mix of stores, but it's still under construction. Don't bother with Westside Pavillion, they don't even have a Gap anymore (really)!
